I was very impressed with the children's selection and programming. Get there early, though, for some events as they fill up quickly. Also, if you have a stroller/wheelchair, navigation of the place is not necessarily intuitive, and space restrictions won't allow you into some parts of the library.

Whenever I am on Nantucket, I alway make a stop at the Atheneum. Besides having a fine collection and an adorable children's room, the building is a museum in itself, with artifacts and furnishings that tell the story of Nantucket Island and its peoples past. The atmosphere is clean, quiet and comfortable. You could spend all day there reading.

Absolutely a must-visit. The sense of history in the building alone is amazing. While it seemed somewhat odd to see a wall of DVDs for loan, this library literally uses history and significance.

One of the great public libraries in the country...historical building, wonderful collection and helpful staff. Don't miss it.

The predecessor of this building has a storied history and a spot with famous lectures before the fall of the whaling industry. But its importance to the fabric of the town is evidenced by the fact that it was rebuilt in one year after the great fire of 1846. So it is an old building. Now, its is a library... More

Librarians were very helpful, as I inquired about the art work and history of the library. I enjoyed the visit, but keep in mind, it is a library for the local patrons.

Worth checking out. Has everything a library should, plus it is a historic building with a great scrimshaw collection. And the Great Hall on the second floor is where Nantucketers used to hold town meetings and had many famous speakers like Frederick Douglas. No charge to see this great building in the heart of town.

This is such a great community resource from your standard fare of books, CD's, internet access but also offers lectures and a childrens program that is truely wonderful.

The Atheneum is a town treasure. The library is in an historic building, for one, including the Great Hall upstairs which is also a fine research facility. The staff is always accommodating and goes to great lengths to get a book, a CD, a movie, for you to enjoy.
