I just love libraries. And I love libraries with character. Put them together and you get the Atheneum. It's a very comfortable place to spend a rainy day on Nantucket

By far one of my favorite places to catch my breath and find some peace and quiet amidst the craziness of town.

Gorgeous old building in the center of town; an easy walk from the ferry boats and anywhere in town. Free-to-use laptops on the second floor. Only complaint is the talkative librarians who think nothing of gossiping/speaking with each other in very loud voices - please cut the chatter!

Ran across this treasure by accident. Wish I could of stayed longer to check out the scrimshaw collection. The building is a testament to the history of the island

Beautiful building with a great selection of movies to check out. It was nice to check out books for my vacation. Free computer access. Occasional evening concerts and other types of events. Also a nice garden outside to enjoy.

I was very impressed with the children's selection and programming. Get there early, though, for some events as they fill up quickly. Also, if you have a stroller/wheelchair, navigation of the place is not necessarily intuitive, and space restrictions won't allow you into some parts of the library.

Whenever I am on Nantucket, I alway make a stop at the Atheneum. Besides having a fine collection and an adorable children's room, the building is a museum in itself, with artifacts and furnishings that tell the story of Nantucket Island and its peoples past. The atmosphere is clean, quiet and comfortable. You could spend all day there reading.

Absolutely a must-visit. The sense of history in the building alone is amazing. While it seemed somewhat odd to see a wall of DVDs for loan, this library literally uses history and significance.

One of the great public libraries in the country...historical building, wonderful collection and helpful staff. Don't miss it.
