Thank you nature, for making such a good place like Matka. We spend 4 hours there, and had a very good lunch at the restaurant. Don't forget to wear comfort shoes. I was told that the best time for visit this place is from March to September, however we had a great time and awesome photos from Matka.

I visited in the end of Jan 2016 so there wasn't many people up there but I could tell this would be a very popular location during the spring and summer timeframe! Very picturesque and tranquil. You can explore caves and kayak. We had a nice lunch of fresh trout that was to die for!! Highly recommend this place when... More

"Matka" is the biggest dam near Skopje. It's not maintained well, so it's often polluted, there is limited space for parking and badly crowded over the weekends so try to avoid coming with a car, or park far away so you don't get stuck in traffic. The restaurant at top is so overpriced and has nothing to offer. I'd recommend... More

We visited in the winter, but the chilly weather didn't take away from our experience. The local restaurant warmed us up after we had taken a small trek around the beautiful scenery. We got to lake Matka by Taxi and asked the driver to wait while we explored.

Lake Matka, about 15 km south-west of Skopje on the Treska River, is the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia. It is a popular destination for residents and visitors. The Treska River gorge is home to several ancient caves, churches and monasteries. The river is popular for kayaking, swimming and fishing, and the steep sides of the gorge for energetic hiking.... Matka Canyon. Macedonia's popular tourist destination is highly recommended for a first-time visitor. Home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Churches, monasteries, caves and is endemic to 77 species of butterfly. Lake Matka is the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia. Great relaxing, communion with nature!

This is one place that must be seen. The canyon is simply majestic with its pristine waters. The restaurant here is first class. The old St. Andrews church is also great, with plenty of history.

A short drive from Skopje, Matka Dam and Lake and Hotel Matka Canyon are a must see when in Macedonia. The man made lake is killer bee and the dam an old school delight. Below the dam, as you drive in, there is a kayak slalom race course - blew me away. Whoda thunk it? The small church there dates... More
