Just a short drive from capital Skopje you'll find a splendid canyon along lake Matka. Green clear water and razor sharp mountains will take your breath away and you could enjoy more closely if you take the boat to explore and to get off the boat to enter nice caves and relax. If you are lucky to go in summer... More

Lake Matka is near Skopje just 25 km from the city center, best way to get there is by car, but you can also get there by public transport (cheap but not recommended). Beautiful hiking trails, great views of the canyon, kayaking and a great cave to visit if you are a diver. There are few restaurants with good food... More

If you like to walk through a wood by the lake, this is a right choice. It is very nice and calm and you can also have lunch or a drink in the restaurant not far from the start of the route. This is a must when visiting Skopje.

As I live in Skopje, I know Matka excellent. When visiting be sure that weather is sunny. Absolutely take a boat trip - cost some 6 eur/person. Includes Visit of a short but nice cave with lot of bats (not dangerous). Monstery church of Saint Andrew on site. Entrance fee - 1 eur/pers. Lunch in the restaurant - ex monastery... More

Lake Matka is one of the most beautiful areas around Skopje. A very popular place among the locals for relaxing after a busy work week. The Canyon has great views, and it has the deepest underwater cave in Europe. Be sure to rent a boat and get to the cave. You can also do Kayaking on the course just before... More

The Canyon of Matka is just 15 km from Skopje and it is easily reachable by car. There are parkings near the dam, but after 11 am in the weekends it is pretty busy and you may not find easily a free parking place. The walking route (well the most official part) is about 6 km along the left side... More

Breathtaking scenery only about 30mins from the center of Skopje. Buses run every 60mins so check the timetable before wandering to a bus stop :) Matka is the last stop and well worth a visit. There is a (very expensive) restaurant along the canyon. Try arriving early: If you decide to visit the bat caves with one of the boats... More

With a good negociacion you can come to the lake for 8 euros by taxi. It's about a half hour drive. At first you will see only the dam, which is not very special, but then you come to a part with a restaurant and a pedestrians path of 6km. It is also possible to do a boat tour, which... More

Saw that there were more activities during the summer, kayaking and rock climbing. still awesome to visit during winter! really really breathtaking views. tip to follow a footpath which leads to (I'm not sure where).. we didn't have time but the path was well guarded by a rope, allocate 2-3 hours. saw teens and families walking the path, further down...
