I've visited many large cities (in 3 countries) that aren't fortunate enough to have such a well-run theater showing independent film. The special events are particularly wonderful -- the nonprofit that runs Amherst Cinema (and Pleasant Street Theater across the river in Northampton) brings in directors frequently during the academic year to present and discuss their films. Last month, in... More

You won't find the latest blockbusters here at Amherst Cinema, but you will find thoughtfully done films with general appeal. Stadium seating is fairly comfortable but lacking adequate legroom. Concessions are delicious: REAL butter on the popcorn, for starters. More

We went for a Sunday showing of Dangerous Methods and unfortunately there were two drunk homeless men in the back rows who picked a fight at the beginning of the movie. I don't think this happens often, but it ruined the movie for us since we were most affected by their behaviour. We have had many uneventful screenings there and... More

Amherst Cinema always has the latest and best independent films. The theaters are small, but provide an intimate movie-going experience. The lobby has a retro-old fashioned feel and serves up popcorn, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and other treats. They also offer a discount with a student ID! More

If your movie taste runs towards the artsy side than this is the place for you! Great mainstream art house films that you would usually have to go to Boston or New York to see, plus obscure documentaries and films series (with guest filmmakers). Concession stand has lots of interesting goodies in addition to the standard movie theater popcorn and... More
