We stayed in the Casco Viejo at the Canal House -- a quiet part of town. There aren't too many restaurants here, only about 10 or so. I would recommend the walk from Frommer's (the French Plaza, Independence Plaza, the presidential palace, the National Theater, and a couple of churches). In the French Plaza -- be sure you have a... more

Walking in Casco Viejo is a very nice activity to do in Panama. The area is very interesting, with very damaged building just beside refubished ones. Nice architecture, nice view on the center of the city. And very good french style ice cream :-) more

A friend and I spent a few hours walking around Casco Viejo. There is a seawall in the vicinity and it's worth a stroll. When we were there, the tide happened to be out and one could see all sorts of debris. Panama City, with its many tall buildings, could be viewed across the harbor. The Old City is a... more

The old town is charming .. full of charecter . I spent 5 hours there . The gentrification takes some thing away from its charm , however its a must too see ...the contrast to the new city is vast . I spent an hour in Bolivar Plaza ... people watching ... and having the odd drink or 2 (it... more

This was the only part of Panama we visited that felt dangerous. The Casco Viejo is best seen from inside of a moving vehicle. I don't know why they send tourists here. If we hadn't been to the Casco Viejo, we would have thought Panama was some sort of Utopia as the rest of the country and city seems very... more

Casco Viejo is definitely worth a visit and bring your camera. Old dilapidated buildings stand alongside newly gentrified buildings. Many churches to visit and a central plaza. Some souvenirs for sale but Panama is not known for its tourist memorabilia, even the Panama hats are made in Ecuador. Be aware, this area is under construction, the streets are narrow, cars... more

Just got back this week from a trip to Panama City. Spent an evening and some daytime hours walking around Casco Viejo. It is absolutely gorgeous. Did you know that Ruben Blades, the actor and salsa singer, lives here? Did you know that the President of Panama comes to work here every day? Romancing the Stone, the movie with Michael... more

It's pretty easy to spend a few hours here. Tons of history, lots of old restored & unrestored buildings on narrow streets that date back as far as the 1600's. Some local artisans selling their Molas an other wares for reasonable prices. Presidential residence and great photographic opportunities to be had around every corner. We felt a morning before the... more

If you liked Cartagena or Havana, you will fall in love with Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antigua and locally as San Felipe. Cobbled and bricked narrow streets draped in plant shaded terraces feel like a walk 400 years ago. The presidential palace is located here away from the noisy hustle and bustle of the busiest international banking district... more

Good place to spend about 1/2 day. We went to the Museo de Canal, walked around, and then grabbed lunch at a small cafe. My favorite part was just walking around, taking in the history and observing the slow but certain gentrification of the area. more
