I lived in Panama several years abck and you never visited Casco Viejo. It was crime-ridden and all the ruins were - ruins! Today it's well worth a visit! We arrived about 5:30pm and meandered until dinner at 6:30pm. Back the next morning for the impressive Panama Canal Museum. Never felt uncomfortable. The restoration work is really impressive and a... More

We've visited Casco Viejo a few times, but just stayed there overnight for the first time (3 nights). Casco Viejo has many things to see and do, but is definately more of a tourist destination as opposed to a more local venue like a Cangrejo. The upscale bars/resturants are populated mostly by tourists and afluent Panamanians out for the night,... More

I've been to Panama City many times years ago. Old town use to be too dangerous to enter. They have really cleaned up their act, security/police on many street corners, old city is clean and spruced up.

Casco Viejo reminds me of old San Juan in Puerto Rico in the making. Six years ago one could not walk safely through the streets but now it is going undergoing extensive restoration, with many new restaurants and home restorations. Still has a way to go before it is true gem of restoration. Hopefully the planning commission will stop a... More

This place has a lot of history and charm to it. You will still see many ruined, run down buildings that haven't been restored yet. However, those that are restored were beautiful! We came here early one day and just roam around the area to take pictures and checked out the different plazas nearby then walked to the Fish Market.

the old city part of town is nice and quaint, but it is surrounded by run down dilapidated buildings.

Casco, the old city of Panama City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is undergoing an extensive revitalization and restoration. Its rich history, historic architecture, culture, and life is experienced in every block. It is safe and walkable within a large portion, and all sorts of restaurants, cafes, an ice cream parlor, coffee shops, clothing and souvenir shops and... More

We took a cab to the Old Town and we walked around, super humid, the streets were dirty with a lot of garbage. People were very nice, the Cathedral was in such a bad shape that they have to ask for donations to save it! This is the first time in my travels that I see a historical town in... More

The first day we took a guided tour, but the next day we went back by ourselves and found our way around with no problem. Lots to look at with the plazas and churches.

We took a cab to Casco Viejo and strolled along the water, where the breeze helped with the heat. The markets were fun I bought brightly woven hammocks, but they also sell traditional clothing and many other items and artisinal goods. The architecture is incredibly old and beautiful. Wear sneakers. When you do this on your own you get to... More
