St George Rotunda is almost hidden in a courtyard behind the Sheraton Hotel. If you don't look for it you can easily miss it. For me, I was walking in a street on the side of the Sheraton when I saw stairs going down a large square and a round beautiful church in the middle of it, almost hidden by... More

The Rotunda is actually hard to come by if you are not looking for it. Situated in an inner courtyard between the presidency and the Sheraton hotel it is a quiet place to enjoy a piece of history.

The visit was a journey back in time to these moments of faith and devotion. The church looks and feels old with its well kept glory and icons.

The church stands next to the Residence of President. This is a good example of Roman Cathoric still can be seen in Orthodox Bulgaria. It seems there is a restroation effort going on. Can't wait to see how it will be.

This is a small church behind Sheraton hotel. It is an impressive building and if you go early in the morning you can attend the service too. What I didn't like was the fact that in the church there was a small souvenir "market". Attending the service while other tourists buy souvenirs is not exactly what I would call spiritual...

No pics allowed inside so support the church by leaving a donation or pick up some postcards of the inner art.... Awesome inside and out!

We were fortunate that our Bulgarian tour guide directed us to St. George hidden in the Courtyard of the Sheraton Hotel. It is an interesting small orthodox church built circa 400 AD. It provides an insight into the long history of the Bulgarian people and Bulgarian Christianity. It is also rather amazing that it is till used for church services.

St George is the oldest Byzantine church in Sofia, and probably one of the oldest in Balkans. Situated inside the alley of the presidential buiding should not be trespassed. Once you take photos of the feather topped presidential guards, just walk along on the adjacent parking entrance inside the alley. Noone will stop you. There, surrounded by roman ruins stands... My partner and I stumbled across this completely randomly. What a shock! And to think that they still do services inside. We accidentally almost walked into a service (oops....), so just a warning! Really impressive that something so old is still being used.
