The elegance of this gorgeous mansion shines beautifully in the polished wood carvings and chandeliers - all apparently renovated recently - as a fabulous backdrop to the gaucho history and culture displayed there. Well worth the price, and photos are allowed throughout the facility. Handworked silver mate' cups and straws were a fascinating part of the exhibit. Two were fantastic... More

Unfortunately the Moneda section of the museum was closed for renovations. We did however get to look round a magnificent collection of all things Gaucho. It was a shame that the displays seemed old fashioned and unable to depict that feeling of life that is so much part of the Gaucho culture. The vast array of silver knives, stirrups, belts... More

The 4 stars are for the building, which is gorgeous and very well restored. The gaucho collection didn't interest me very much and I would give it 2.5 stars. They do have some plaques in English, which is useful. The finance part of the museum was closed in August 2012 as they were redoing the exhibits. However, it's free, so... More

Pretty dull, the most impressive thing is the building itself. It was empty so we had it to ourselves.

I loved the building! Fabulous marble staircase that was once part of a grand house. Groucho material was interesting, money section was closed.

A small museum with no entrance fee, this place had a wonderful collection of all sorts of items associated with gaucho (cowboy) life in Uruguay. Great explanations of what the items were used for too - some were only in Spanish while others had English translations. It was a great place to spend an hour. When I was there they... More

The building it self is impresive with the beautifull staircases, tapestry, high decorated ceilings, doors, etc. on the first floor there's a art display an upstairs an excelent colection of gaucho knifes, bolasos, horse sadles, pictures and much more. We tought this was one of the better things to see in Montevideo. Don't miss

This modest museum is housed in a marble showcase with incredible archetectural features. I can't add enough pictures to do it justice. Brought over as ballast these remarkable buildings are the true history of Montevideo. The Gaucho museum houses remnants of the legacy of Uruguayans. The craftsmanship, no - artisanship of a bolo, a knife, mere horse tact meticulously adorned... More

This small museum features a dozen or so compact rooms devoted to Uruguayan money and the history of the Uruguayan cowboy. It's interesting (and free), but not especially memorable--except for the building that houses the museum, which is SPECTACULAR. Formerly the home of a wealthy and well-connected Uruguayan family, it has recently been refurbished and is emblematic of the hundreds... More
