We did the guided tour and it was amazing. I strongly recommend. I did the tour in Portuguese but they have Spanish (of course) and English available. You can do the Tour and go for lunch at the Mercado.

Do this on Sunday, when the town is quite and dead. Very low cost. All languages given tours. 1 hour. Take your instrument if you can, maybe your guide will allow you to play a few tunes.

We decided to see The Visit. The Theater is beautifully done and a good sample of Art Deco. the tickets are inexpensive (US$8 each). The company was excellent in a Very funny production. We have a wonderful time. People are very polite. If you speak Spanish this is a must in the city!!!

Went to Teatro Solis to see a play from Bertolt Brecht with my girlfriend and was beatiful. The teather is well conserved, including pre-war original Baccarat's chandelier, really impressive. They offer guided tours, and if I remember well, wednesday they are free. If you are in Montevideo and love theaters, this place is a must!

A classical theatre with a beautiful archtecture. Check if there's something going on there while you're at Montevideo. It's worth it.

If you've been to the more spectacular Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires you probably don't have to see this, but it's nice enough in its somewhat more modest way. Similar layout, well preserved. There is also a modern auditorium for experimental productions. Nice gift shop.
