Travelling in the Andean Explorer is a unique experience, a route between mountains, clouds, snow-capped mountains and puna finishing in the majestic Lake Titicaca. Its coaches involve you in an environment extremely decorated with the elegant style of Pullman trains of the decade of 1920. Its tourist shows, the 5-fork lunch, dining cars, observatory-bar car outdoors, among other attractions. « less

Lots of people ride the trains in Peru and this was our mode of transportation to and from Machu Picchu. It was a quality experience. They even serve light snacks during the trip.

I love being on a train and the romance of this kind of travel but my experience on this journey fell short of rail I've been on in Europe, US, Asia and India using regular train lines. I felt lucky getting tickets on short notice for my wife's birthday and spent a lot of time building the experience up based... More

If you are into special train journeys rather than getting from A to B asap this may appeal to you. First up there are not too many train rides at this altitude, reaching 4,300m at one point and stopping so you can get pictures with an altitude sign. The average spread for the trip is about 25km/h so it's no... More

The first hint that this is something really special is the view of the staff and the carriages from the waiting room at Cusco. The staff are dressed impeccably and the train is presented beautifully. Shades of the Orient Express! Boarding the train is breathtaking. One almost expects to see Hercule Poirot at a table laid with linen and silver,... More

This was a wonderful way to travel from Puna to Cusco. There were fantastic views of both city and countryside. Service was excellent. Live music dancing and a bar tending class. The food was average. I especially enjoyed the last dining car which has large windows and an open rear wall that was great for photography. I had read that... More

This is a must journey. From the moment you set off you will I suspect, not expect at least one aspect of the journey...this will take you through a main street of a town that looks like a cross between 'blade runner' and a post armageddon horror film. Then onto great altitude, across barren plains and thru moutains all the time being... More

Really enjoyed the experience of long train ride through the Andes, but the journey to Puno is apparently a couple of hours shorter by road. Last bit of journey very slow, so tired by the time we reached our hotel. Was prepared for 'fashion show' which was pretty dire, but staff all pleasant. Food was reasonable and a good Pisco... More

We took the train from Cusco to Lake Titicaca. The service was very good and watching the landscape change dramatically though out the day was exciting. You get to stop and see locals selling their crafts. But this spot is the great watershed. North to the Amazon and south to the Lake and the great plateau. Avoid the fresh fruit... More

This was a special experience. First confession, I love trains. First class experience. Food good. Views stunning. Some highlights for me was going through the market at Juliaca- for about a mile the train goes within two feet of the market stalls which front onto the tracks. We saw everything from barber shops, food, housewares. People smiling and waving. Also... More
