Exquisitely decorated in the manner of the great Pullman trains of the 1920's, the Andean Explorer boasts a full fleet of refurbished coaches. You have to know that for a very expensive price ($220 one way), you have NO breakfast (just a lunch), NO explanations/ NO guide at all of all the fantastic various villages and landscapes the train goes through, NO map (unless you pay), not even a mate de coca (unless again you pay); except for the lunch, everything is additional!!...... more

We rode the Andean Explorer from Cusco to Puno and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The train is very comfortable and true to style. The lunch was a bit ordinary but I have never had a meal on a train that wasn't. The trip lasts 10 hours and it is a good way to see the high plains of Peru. The... more

Two of us rode the Andean Explorer from Cuzco to Puno, Peru Oct. 23, 2009. It was spectacular all the way -- amazing scenery, great service, entertainment and food. The crew almost worked themselves to death. It is an unequaled way to see a huge slice of Peru from the agricultural areas outside of Cuzco to the awesome plains and... more

So, do yourself a huge favour and take the Andean Explorer from Cusco to Puno or vice-versa. This is a real, old world train experience with top of the line service, a beautifully appointed train and a fantastic observer car (open at one end - no glass so excellent photos) at the back of the train where you can sit... more

We rode this train from Cusco to Puno. It is a 10 hour ride and leaves the station in Cusco around 8:00am and arrives in Puno around 6:00pm. The station in Cusco has comfortable seats in the waiting room and one can check his luggage in just outside of the waiting room. The train has comfortable seats and an observation... more

We did the Cusco-Puno journey after a tiring few days at Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu. Hence we were looking to relax, chill out and enjoy the ride- which is exactly what this journey offered us. The cons, I agree with other reviewers: 1. it is a little more expensive than other travel options 2. the journey takes all day.... more

Recently, the Andean Explorer was hit by a couple of strikes with one being a general transportation strike which gripped Peru and the second wasa regional strike which caused a blockage of the tracks. Twice I had to change my reservation and finally had to pay extra to fly from Cuzco via Lima to Puno to keep my hotel and... more

The train is a luxury first-class job - well staffed - who are willing - but the food and drink included in the massive $220 per person price is only a well produced nouvelle quisine 3 courses with a small glass of wine - breakfast, snacks, coffe, tea, water, cocktails are all extras and expensive - e.g. Pisco sour @... more

This train from Cusco to Puno is operated by PeruRail which also runs the trains to and from Machu Picchu. They seem to have mastered running a tourist rail franchise, for better or worse. On the good side- this luxury train offered old-style travel with armchair seats and white tablecloths, decent service, and amazing views of the Andean valley, either... more

This is a 10 hour trip; I went from Puno to Cusco that takes you back to a more elegant time. Lunch and afternoon tea are provided, that lunch was OK, but the desert was disappointing. The only option on the menu was a poor rice pudding, but they were happy to offer you something else at a cost. The... more
