Lots of vicunas and alpacas!

We saw lots of really cute vicunas and alpacas there, I'd definitely recommend it! Make sure you make it to Chivay to go to the Colca canyon.

We hired a driver to take us to the reserve, and although we saw alpaca, sheep, and the endangered vicuna, it was hard to take pictures and they were often fleeting. I had hoped to have a more personal experience, being able to walk around more, but most of our photos were taken from the car. Still, I'd recommend just... More

Great reserve especially to see Vicuñas. Well worth the drive from Arequipa . Good viewing from the road. Also good place to see llamas and alpacas

This is probably the closest that I have been to the Altiplano. This geography has for long been described as out of worldly. One of those places where anywhere you turn your eye, you will have something to breath in and remember for rest of your lives. For me it was the bus ride between Arequipa and Cuzco (via Juliaca)... This is a must while driving to the Colca Canyon (or to Puno). The views of the volcanoes are beutiful. Also you can see several vicunas, alpacas and llamas on the way.

You cross this large National Park if you do tour of Colca Canyon from Arequipa. The park starts just 20km from Arequipa and rapidly gains altitude. It is important you stock up on coca leaves or at least drink some coca tea before setting off. Chewing the leaves may seem revolting but it cancels out the effect of any altitude... More

I visited Laguna Salinas with several friends while living in Arequipa. We had to hire a private guide and its a long drive to the Laguna on a dreadful road. But seeing the view of the salt lake when you come over the mountains to the laguna is frankly one of the most amazing experience I have had in my... More

We rented a car in Arequipa to drive to Cabanaconde and the Colca Canyon. (Great trip! But the road from Chivay to Cabanaconde was rough, to say the least.) This reserve was just along the route and we stopped several times to take photos of vicunas. When we stopped for views of volcanos, the altitude was 4910 meters, or 16,100... More
