Much of the route from Arequipa to Colca winds through the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve. It’s definitely worth taking the time to stop a few times en route as it’s breathtakingly beautiful. There’s also lots of opportunities for photos of llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas.

I heard about Laguna de las Salinas in the Lonely Planet and immediately added to my list of places to visit in Arequipa! As I was travelling on my own and there is no organised tours I had to book a private one, it was expensive but totally worth it! This place is breathtaking, one of the most beautiful places... If you're heading to Colca, you'll spend a few hours driving through this beautiful reserve. The bucolic plains with the backdrop of the imposing volcanoes and bizarre rock formations are beautiful and relaxing but stay alert for the inevitable vicuña and alpaca sightings! The alpaca and llama are domesticated so there are plenty of opportunities for you to take some... More

We hired a guide and 4x4 and drove up from the South side. It is a long ride up a twisting narrow and dusty road, dodging mining trucks. The lake area itself is beautiful, otherworldly. Flamingos, cameloids galore. A worthwhile day trip from Arequipa.

We drove through this vast nature reserve on our way from Arequipa to Chivay. Once out of the bustling city traffic we came to the altiplano (high plateau) where the highlight was seeing vicunas in their natural habitat; they look wonderfully sleek and elegant creatures - very different from the alpacas and llamas that we also saw. We stopped at... More

We went in June 2013, passing thru on the way to Colca Valley coming from Arequipa. We got to see beautiful landscapes and vicunas pretty close. If you are taking the same way I would recommend a few days of acclimatisation as you'll pass at 4900m and it can take it's toll. But it's definitely worth going if you go... More

First its not easy to get into deeper regions of the national park and the road is bad so you need a 4x4 (with driver is the best since finding the way its not easy at all). We visited the Salina lake and some surrounding areas. Already the drive from Arequipa is great and I would say it is for... More

We had our hotel staff (Libertador) arrange for an English speaking guide/driver to take us up towards Colca Canyon but not all the way... after the first noisy half-hour, one leaves the city. Once the road passes an enormous concrete plant, the countryside becomes more and more enthralling with every kilometer. The climb from the elevation of the AQP airport... More

We hired a driver to take us to the reserve, and although we saw alpaca, sheep, and the endangered vicuna, it was hard to take pictures and they were often fleeting. I had hoped to have a more personal experience, being able to walk around more, but most of our photos were taken from the car. Still, I'd recommend just... More

We saw lots of really cute vicunas and alpacas there, I'd definitely recommend it! Make sure you make it to Chivay to go to the Colca canyon.
