I have the 2011 Fodors Guidebook, and it didnt even mention the Uros Islands which are in Lake Titicaca. They were INCREDIBLE, and we were the only American tourists there! The Uros Islands are man made -- reeds-- and have a bunch of little islands that over 2000 people inhabit! We booked a three hour tour which left from Puno... More

I went on an organised trip with Edgar's that also included the Isla Taquile. We were well received as a group, given a little tour and invited into the simple reed huts they live in. Loads of photo ops, and time for shopping. For a little extra money, we were taken in a mini-Kon Tiki reed boat across the waters... More

I just loved the Uros islands on Lake Titicaca! Actually we saw a few different islands on the short boat trip from Puno, but were so pleased that our tour company (Do Latin America, also recommendable – true experts on Peru and could not do enough for us) had arranged for us to spend the night on Taquile island. What... More

Three of us stayed overnight on Qhantati Island, Lake Titicaca. The island floats as it is constructed entirely of reeds. The huts, beds, everything was made with reeds. We stayed with the family who live on the island. They were very friendly but our limited Spanish made conversation difficult. Meals were of high quality. Activities included: travelling in a reed... The Islands of Uros are part cultural legacy and part tourist trap. We were enthralled with the simplistic, but culturally rich, lives of these islanders. This makes a good diversion from all of the Inca ruins we had been visiting over the previous week. While in Puno, we boarded a boat and took a tour out to the Uros Islands on Lake Titicaca. On the way, we went through a green scum which lies on the surface on parts of the lake and were told that it is caused by pollution. The islands that we visited are interesting in that they are made from... More

What an amazing experience. There are about 40 islands. You usually visit two which are chosen by the local people so that each island gets an equal share of the income. Its amazing to walk on the islands knowing they have been hand made by piling up reed after reed. They have to add more reeds every month. Then they... More
