Dreamy place with the most unusual vegetation I have ever encountered in these latitudes. This high up in the mountains and the cold winds, produce a furry vegetation with a small chunky size. The cameloids are also smaller than the onesyou see in the southern countries.

I visited the Cajas with a small group of friends. We first went to the Laguna Toreadora where we walked a part of the trail around the Lake. One of our party was suffering from the altitude and cold and chose to stay and enjoy the small restaurant that is at the Lake. The views were beautiful and the younger... More

Though we have barely scratched the surface of what Cajas has to offer, merely driving to the park entrance from Cuenca is enough to both frighten and lure the uninitiated. To think that such wildness exists a mere thirty minute drive from a city, vibrant with a population of half a million people, is astonishing. The mysterious nature of these... More

Cajas National Park was perhaps the most interesting place we visited on our recent trip to Ecuador. The elevation above treeline hosts plant and animal species found nowhere else in the country and some nowhere else in the world! The paramo type environment with the multitude of high altitude lakes makes you feel like you have left the planet entirely... More

When visiting Cuenca we went on a day trip hiking to Cajas. The landscape is magical especially the forrest. If you're planning to go keep in mind that Cajas is at 4.000 meters hight so make sure your in a ok condition.

I loved this park, the scenic views and unique beauty is breath taking. It can get cold, you will have to bring a fleece jacket.

A beautiful national park, sadly with considerable encroachment from neighbouring dairy farms. However the natural vegetation is stunning & varied. Trekked from 3900m to 3800m thru fabulous tundra-like environment (paramor/moor land) & an ancient 'paper tree' forest. Boggy in places. A fragile environment which needs stringent rules re sticking to the path. Weather is fickle here so come prepared for... More

Stopped here en-route from Cuenca to Guayaquil, reminded me of North Yorks Moors. Worth the walk despite slippy conditions, peaty bog in part. Definitely need your walking boots and a pole would be helpful but not essential. Alpacas on hills instead of sheep. Moody and unexpected.

My family and I are living in Cuenca for the year and make regular trips up to Cajas. We love Cajas. We have had magical moments there and almost always end up just feeling very blessed to be able to breathe in such beauty. To make the most of a trip to Cajas, however, there are several things you need... More
