I am so glad we went to Homero Ortega's shop. We were given a tour of the process to make a Panama Hat and got to spend time in the shop choosing the perfect hat for us. I am so appreciative of the hats now that I know and understand all that went into making them. Their prices are excellent... More

A free tour in English is offered which covers the history to present day production of the genuine Panama Hat. It is very informative and well worth the time. If you are thinking of buying a Panama Hat while in Ecuador, this is the place to go. They have hats for sell for men, women and children. Should you buy... More

It's better than the other Panama hat museum near the museum. They have a more complete museum and work space, and you get a guided tour with a free local drink. All information is in Spanish and English. They are open on Saturday, but it's better to go on during the week, because you will actually get to see people... More

Very interesting to see how the hats are made, a lot of work and the shop you can buy hats or local silver jewellery or crafts. It's a nice looking factory a few minutes out side the city centre. The hats range in price $25- $1000, lots of colours. Bring water, you might be there a while looking around. More

We enjoyed sneaking in a tour of the factory that is just down the street from the airport, on our final day in Cuenca. We drove our rental car there and they accommodated us with a Spanish speaking guide. We felt like we learned quite a bit and didn't feel any pressure to buy (even though we ended up buying... More

This store is definitely designed for tourists. I did not go to other Panama hat stores nor factories so cannot compare. However, we were told by our tour guide that this is "the" store and that Homer Ortega was legendary in the Panama hat industry. I think the business has been passed down from three to four generations. There is... More

If you like Panama hats you will love Homero Ortega P. and Hijos! There is a pretty interesting little museum here showing the history of this Panama Hat manufacturing company, along with the evolution of the Panama hat making processes. However, the highlight for me was wandering around the factory where they prepare the hat's straw material, dye some of... More

Our guide arranged a tour for us and we and another couple got a full tour of the factory. An employee gave us the 30 minute tour (in Spanish) which ended in the store. My wife and I bought our classic "Panama Hats". This was very much worth the time - especially if you intend to buy a real Panama. More
