So much to see and do. Churches, restaurants, shopping, small boutique hotels, [ I stayed at Plaza Sucre Boutique Hotel for $44 a nite]. Ate lunch at a small local restaurant for $2 for 3 course lunch with beverage, tax, and tip!!!

There are so many sites to see. Most churches are opened for tours, some even offer guides- but many do not- so you can just wander the colorful squares, too many churches and museums to mention..

The old town was great with such a range of churches, which are all decorated very differently. The cathedral is definitely worth a visit for its intricate designs and also had tonnes of flowers around it when we visited. Be careful to keep valuables hidden away and be wary when taking pictures as people can snatch them. The monastery that's... More

we spent a few nights in the old town as a pit stop to other locations. Loads of charm, fascinating buildings full of character. Did not go out after dark-we were both tired and advised not to, but this did not take away from our stay. After visiting the new town was very happy to have spent most of our... More

We went here on a "Hop on Hop off" bus which I also recommend. Walk around and enjoy all the sights - churches, plazas, old streets etc. I didn't feel unsafe at all as there were a lot of police/security people around. However, a local gal who worked in a pharmacy still told me to hold on to my backpack... More

Interesting old buildings, amazing historical churches, narrow cobble stone streets, lots of small local eateries with traditional food, great plazas to sit and people watch, police on almost every street so tourists feel safe.

Although the sights are beautiful, breathing is very difficult due to the overwhelming amount of auto exhaust emissions. People were wearing masks and holding cloths over their mouths and noses. Traffic is difficuclt to negotiate.

I think this is the best part of Quito but then I like history and the old stuff. It is fairly small and walkable although a little hilly. Typical historic section with churches and museums. I was there May 1st and a lot of the museums were closed due to the "holiday" they have.
