Good site and great views. DO NOT WALK DOWN TO CITY OR HIGH RISK OF MUGGING

Absolutely do not walk down to city from Panecillo. My travel buddy and I got mugged by 3 street hoods with a knife on the steps going back down into Quito. Obviously, the muggers... read more

Absolutely do not walk down to city from Panecillo. My travel buddy and I got mugged by 3 street hoods with a knife on the steps going back down into Quito. Obviously, the muggers have a spotter up by Panecillo looking for travelers walking down the paths to the city. The spotter calls the hoodlums and they sit in wait... More

We walked from la zona Mariscal, where we were staying, to la Virgen del Panecillo, but you can always cab it. You learn about the construction and history of the huge sculpture, there is also some food and souvenir vendors onsite.

The trip up is best taken by cab, since all the travel companies indicate the lack of safety in the neighborhood leading up to the Virgin Mary Monument. I could see it was a sketchy place, although very safe at the top, with some tourists during my visit, and there were several kiosks selling food and souvenirs. The view is... More

We didn't walk all the way up to the statue but we could see it fairly clearly from the old town section of Quito. At least do that; get close enough to see some of the detail.

We walked the "1000 steps" up to this statue which was an awesome view of the city and clouds over the mountains but on the way down at dusk we were "mugged" by two young guys with a knife. They pretended to tie their shoes then pulled a knife on my husband who is a big guy. He had a... More

It's a long hike or a short tax ride to get to the top but the views are stunning. The monument is impressive up close, too.

Beautiful views from up here and be sure to pay the $1 for the climb to the top. Quite a beautiful structure and the inside is just as fascinating.

We used the hop on hop off bus & it stops 30 minutes at the top here. Fantastic views...especially on clear days & quite a few craft vendors if you don't get to go to Otavalo.

A long drive up to this monument but once there stunning views over Quito and the surrounding volcanoes. You climb up to the foot of the Virgin statue which takes your breath away due to the altitude. It is interesting that there are photoes and the history of it's building.
