Don't try to walk up te hill to the statue- too many thieves. The view is great, but not much reason to go to the top of the statue. ($2 entrance)

This is quite a monument! We went during the week and it was pretty deserted. I would follow the advice we received about taking a taxi to the top of the hill rather than walking up the steps from the old city. There it seemed very safe and it is worth seeing this close up. You get a great view...
