Description: Spectacled bear watching in the Cloud Forests of Maquipucuna is a unique...
Spectacled bear watching in the Cloud Forests of Maquipucuna is a unique experience! Besides being a birdwatchers paradise, the Maquipucuna Cloud Forest Reserve is the official home of the endangered Spectacled bear and thousand other wildlife species. It is now the beginning of March and the small avocado trees ("Pacches") are loaded with fruit, hence we expect a spectacled bear season 2015 sometime between August and November. The visit to the Reserve and the internationally awarded Maquipucuna Ecolodge offers the opportunity to explore one of the most spectacular natural sites on the planet. The nearly 15,000 acres Maquipucuna Reserve, located only 2 hours away from Quito, is also home to at least 376 species of birds, 45 species of mammals, 250 species of butterflies and over 2000 species of plants. That is, Maquipucuna harbors about 10% of Ecuador's plant diversity and 4% of all the bird species known for the entire planet! Maquipucuna has the category of Protected Forest and has been declared as Important Bird Area (IBA). The ecolodge offers comfortable private or shared bathrooms and all with hot water, a camping site, amazing local bilingual guides, 32 km of trails from easy to strenuous, waterfalls and rivers. The lodge is run by the non-profit Maquipucuna which offers the possibility of all inclusive packages, including return transportation from Quito or the airport area.

We stayed at Maquipucuna for three nights recently and would have probably been happier staying two, mostly because in general we prefer more independent travel. We have some lovely memories of Maquipucuna and appreciated the friendly and helpful staff. We were disappointed by what was sometimes an inability to enjoy the sounds of the forest. Maquipucuna seems to double as... More

We stayed at the lodge as a couple for four days and three nights. Maquipucuna Lodge offers packages which include a guide for unlimited walks each day, all meals, a room with a private bathroom (and HOT water, a rarity in Ecuador), unlimited boiled water for drinking and the park entrance fee. It's a very good deal - if you... More

I had the chance to visit this ecological reserve and was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend for travelers who prefer nature than cityscapes. They have conserve a beautiful pristine tropical rain forest close to Quito. You have some small waterfalls where you can go swim and have some fun. perfect for bird watching.

We hiked the Maquipucuna Cloud Forest Reserve on the 1st day with our tour group. I am in great shape and had numerous people with us of various ages. I did find the hike to be a bit difficult because it was steep and muddy, but enjoyed the waterfalls and the interesting bird that we saw that is only to... More

We liked the lodge built out of Gaudua bamboo, the comfortable beds and large walk-in shower, plus good food in the outdoor dining area above the river. Several great trails go into the cloud forest. Be sure to have one of the guides point out the birds; many are hard to see. Birding along the road is great too. The... More

This is a private reserve with a lovely small and intimate lodge located on the private reserve. Birdwatching and hiking through the cloud forest are the major activities. The guides are very nice even to those of us who do not know a toucan from a parrot. There are three meals a day served in a nice open air restaurant.... More

Our driver and Rodrigo, the director, arrived at our hotel early to take us to Maquipucuna and then they waited for us. Unfortunately our driver didn't speak any English and our Spanish is very limited so after we dropped Rodrigo at the office, we didn't get any insight into Quito and the area on our way up. We were the... More

There is a great cabin to stay, fantastic trails and by far, the place with the higher biodiversity I've seen in my life.
