We did not know about Oswaldo Guayasamín before our trip to Quito, it was an amazing experience to visit the museum and La Capilla del Hombre. He brought to life the Ecuadorian struggle with passionate and powerful (if not , in some cases) MASSIVE paintings..!! Well worth the visit if in Quito and you have an interest in the history... Interesting artist, rich socialist who mixed widely in the world, produced interesting art and a fascinating foundation whether or not it is a tax dodge or not

The very powerful works of a major, talented artist wonderfully displayed in a purpose built gallery adjacent to his house. The house is well worth a visit, and we had a wonderful guide who spoke excellent English, and really brought to life his myriad influences. It was only 3 USD Cab ride from our hotel.

You really feel the pain that Guayasim felt in his life. A lot of things he painted were inspired by his own pain. There was a guided tour giving good information with each painting, we would not always have understood the intention of the painting without it. One minor point was that it was only in Spanish.

Guayasamin's art makes a huge emotional impact. A visit to the museum and his studio (the museum includes modern galleries built on the beautiful grounds of his private studio and home) gives wonderful context to his art, and inspires deep respect for an artist who is largely unknown outside his home country.

The private home was the highlight of my visit: what a fabulous place with a fascinating mix of pre-columbian (some erotic!), colonial and contemporary art pieces. My one big complaint: the tour guide was very perfunctory and was rushing us through the place. While I sympathize with Guayasamin's themes, his paintings didn't have the effect on me that he intended.... More

I didn't know Guayasamín before but I instantly fell in love with his paintings when I first saw them. He is an important part of Quito and Ecuador and you must see it! In the museum you can not only see his art but also visit the house where he used to live and also you have a great view... More

A jewel in Quito. This museum and private home is a must see during a visit. Be sure to ask the guide to slow down so you can enjoy the beauty of the home.

Guayasamin Museum was one of the two best sights I saw in Quito. It's really four things in one: 1. A world-class art museum, primarily featuring the works of Guayasamin himself (which are absolutely brilliant), but also Guayasamin's private collection of the works of other artists, such as a series of Goya's late-career sketches of his nightmares, a Chagall, and... There is so much more to this museum than just Oswaldo Guayasamin's paintings. He was a collector as well as an artist and the museum has a nice selection of pre-Columbian pottery, religious statues and artifacts, art works by other indigenous painters and even 2 Tang Dynasty terracotta tomb figures. The house and his studio are simply amazing to tour.... More
