Interesting but....

This is the main plaza in Valparaiso near the port. Other parts of the city are much more interesting and attractive.

Hard to miss this special space in Valpo as it is the crux of the downtown and an essential part of its history. See it, take it in.

Our private guide brought us here and explained some of the history surrounding this area. The Navy Monument has a guard who walks around--nice view from there of the Hotel Victoria, Naval building and the city gates from the Port there. Many of the buildings surrounding area are newer while some have the old charm.

Walk around the square slowly for a while and take in everything, then walk over to the seaport just a short block away and see the shops and small boats. Take a 1/2 hour ride in the Paciific if you like then have a drink upstairs at the Seaport bar. What a way to spend a 1/2 day or more.... More

We walked to the square from our hotel (Ibis)...crowds were gathering and we heard music...then we saw a procession of people carrying a structure built to resemble a tree which they then assembled in the square. A fascinating experience with great music and atmosphere....this was in the middle of January and is an annual event. Not to be missed.

From our cruise ship deck, the first thing I saw were two white tall buildings looking like two guards guarding the Plaza Sotomayor. From our ship it looks soooo close. We can just walk across the street and then we'll be there. For the tourists no such luck. For some regulation we had to take the shuttle bus and it... More

This is where you can take 'tours for tips' with the Wallys. It meets in the corner at 10 am and 3pm each day and is the best walking tour to help you become familiar with the city. You have to be careful of the pick pockets who abound the square, keep your wallets and cameras safe.

We had our van broken into in mid-morning in the middle of the square with lots of tourists around and even a policeman nearby who managed to see nothing. It is notorious for pickpockets and purse snatchers in the square and in the alleys just off it. Be on your guard!!!

Plaza Sotomayor needs some love and attention. It has seen better days. It is not ramshuckled but could use a sprucingly-up. The trolley goes right by, and for 250 pesos it's a good way to get a quick ride and feel for the city.

This place will be on your way tour between any of paseos that you see in Valparaiso. The Naval building is pretty and nicely decorated. There are also some statues worth a look. Watch out for cars as the driving lanes are not very clearly marked.
