This is where you can take 'tours for tips' with the Wallys. It meets in the corner at 10 am and 3pm each day and is the best walking tour to help you become familiar with the city. You have to be careful of the pick pockets who abound the square, keep your wallets and cameras safe.

We had our van broken into in mid-morning in the middle of the square with lots of tourists around and even a policeman nearby who managed to see nothing. It is notorious for pickpockets and purse snatchers in the square and in the alleys just off it. Be on your guard!!!

Plaza Sotomayor needs some love and attention. It has seen better days. It is not ramshuckled but could use a sprucingly-up. The trolley goes right by, and for 250 pesos it's a good way to get a quick ride and feel for the city.

This place will be on your way tour between any of paseos that you see in Valparaiso. The Naval building is pretty and nicely decorated. There are also some statues worth a look. Watch out for cars as the driving lanes are not very clearly marked.

Full of messy pigeons and traffic. Worth a walk thru only to get to the Ascensor Penal . There is a public tourist info office with free maps.

This square was a bit different from others since it is a little confusing which part is the square and which is the road. Still, it is a very good reference point, an interesting historical place and has many beautiful buildings around.

The state of this square is reflected in the general state of Valparaiso... VERY poor. The locals have no pride in their town. TIP: don't visit this rat hole of a place!!!!! Valparaiso is a sorry dump.

This location was the starting point for a tour and we received information on the meaning the statute and buildings facing the square . This site is obviously significant for Chileans but for others it is just a pretty square and good meeting spot.

I thought Plaza Sotomayer was quite attractive although could never really figure out the traffic running through it so just be careful. Also, there is really no place to sit and relax. It's close to the port area and makes for some nice photographs.

There's really not much going on here. There are a few places to grab ice cream or coffee on the north side of the square, but if you want to sit outside and people watch, you will likely be disappointed. Beyond the nice architecture of the Navy Building, the monument to the unknown soldier and the meeting point for Tours4Tips... More
