Taking a Chilean cuisine class with El café Vinilo’s chef was by far one of the best experiences I had in Valparaíso . This is the only place in the city that introduces participants to the history and culture of Chile and its food. The participants get to cook 5 to 6 traditional Chilean dishes. Gonzalo the chef gives the class in Spanish and English.Pebre, Pisco Sour, Ceviche ( The Chef explains the difference between Chilean and Peruvian Ceviche) Charquican (one of the most important dishes in Chile) Chuchoca de Maíz and Puré de papas con Naranja y menta which is a mi of mashed potatoes with oranges and mint .Before the class starts, we get all the ingredients needed at the local market where you can find all the typical Chilean fruits and vegetables. The class includes enough food samplings for most people to not need lunch afterwards

Want to find the longest street in Valparaiso? The house where Neruda lived in hiding? The best bakery, empanadas, restaurant in the city? Then you must take the Anti tour! Gonzalo showed us so much in three hours--restoration sites, spectacular views, quiet neighborhoods and elegant civic buildings. His passion for his city is infectious, and we felt privileged to be... More

Gonzalo loves the city, the people and even the dogs of Valparaiso, and it shows for every minute of this very personal and intimate "anti-tour". Not perhaps for those who prefer the bland impersonality and predictability of official coach tours (if there are any such people). It is more like being shown the town by a real local, by perhaps... My husband and I got to know Valparaiso through this trip in a way not possible on our own. We did not have or want a car in this city of narrow, steep, windy roads. Gonzalo navigated the canyons and hills expertly and showed us neighborhoods that we would not have thought or could not explore on foot. We made... More

The tour was great! The duration was initially supposed to be 3 hours, but Gonzalo took us around for 4. He will bring you to the various Cerros of Valpo, with a final stop to the best Empanada in town. He is a very nice guy, he loves his city with its culture and traditions and you can feel that.... As a couple of intrepid world travellers, we love exploring and integrating with local culture, cuisine and customs wherever we go. Chilean food struck a chord with us right from the moment we arrived in the beautiful country, and when we were told about Gonzalo's cooking class and tour, we simply could not resist - and what a day it... Unconventional tour, nice views, lot of information beside the usual guides, best empanadas. Gonzalo was a great guide, thanks a lot.

The most important part of the cooking class was the food, and to Gonzalo's credit, the food we made was excellent and was enough for two full meals each. Primarily because of that, I think I would recommend this cooking class to others. Gonzalo was also a very good teacher - he knew what he was doing and was patient... More

We were very disappointed, Gonzalo was very nice, friendly, took us to the market, then to his parents' home. But we had asked to learn to cook fish, which was frozen, and no special technique, the fish for the ceviche was also frozen, the drink we had was Fanta Schop,( Fanta with beer!)no Pisco sour or wine as promised.we didn't... I was looking for an authentic experience in Valparaiso, and I got it with with Gonzalo's cooking class. First, he took me to the market to get the ingredients for that night's meal. We sipped on mote con huesillo, a traditional Chilean drink made with dried peaches and wheat, as we traversed the food stalls. Back at the kitchen, Gonzalo... More

Our group of 4 had a great time with chef Gonzalo. Gonzalo is not only a trained chef but also very passionate about Chilean culture and cuisine. We learned about the dishes we prepared as well as new culinary skills (knife skills etc). After dinner Gonzalo took us to a special lookout spot to view the entire city at night... More
