We arrived in Santiago on the day the funicular to the top of this very steep hill re-opened after several months of refurbishment. It was also a holiday weekend and the place was awash with tourists and locals. Just as well that it was open as it would have been a long, tough climb on a warm day though the... More

There are amazing views of the city from this hill. A huge statue of the Virgin Mary has been at the very top for more than a century. We were driven to the top by our guide so we did not use the funicular.

It is worth waiting to go up the hill after it rained so that there isn't a blanket of smog covering the city. The fenucular ride up is worth it if you get into the last carriage, you get a fabulous view of the city. I would definitely recommend walking back down, the scenery is spectacular and there are tons... More

I was excited to get on the funicular. After watching the video before we entered the elevator, I was concerned. But the few was worth it even with the thick smog we could see for miles.

There is a funicular you can pay that takes you to the top, but the hike is well worth it for the views and a little exercise. The hike is a little strenuous, but there are many benches along the way to take breaks. Fantastic views of the city on a clear day. My Top 5 things to do in... More

If one is visiting Santiago, Chile this is a must see place. The reason is that it is a hilly area that gives great views of Santiago in all directions. When I first visited Santiago in 2005 I was able to ride the funicular up the hill. This time in January 2013 the funicular was not operating at the time... More

Four of us walked to San Cristobal Hill and took the funicular up to the top of the ride. Off and walked up many steps to the statue of Mary. We had hoped that we would get a good view of the city and the Andes. Not to be - at this time of year there is a fog/mist that... More

I decided to rent a bike and ride it up San Cristobal Hill. The ride up was good exercise (which had been needing for sometime) and the free wheel down was very pleasant due to the amazing scenery and view over Santiago city. Not being religious the statue of the virgin itself had very little relevance to me but I... More

A quaint funicular ride to the top of the hill, wade through throngs of biker that had pedaled up on this May Day and enjoy the faithful at the shrine to Santa Maria. Great views of Santiago, weather permitting, a good way to get a sense of the city and to spend a couple of hours.

Arriving at the top of the hill via the funicular, we were surprised. There is the view of the city to be sure, but the hilltop is dedicated to Mary. There are large grounds, terraced, rising to a dominating statue of Mary. The church, Immaculate Concepcion, has an interior featuring bas-reliefs of significant events in her life.
