WOW, We have just come home from spending 7 nights in Singapore. We did all the usual touristy things which were great fun and on our final night we completed the Joo Chiat Foodie Walk hosted by Tony Tan from Betel Box. It was so much more than just a foodie tour, we also learnt about the culture and lifestyle... More

Tony gave us a fascinating insight into Singapore from a locals perspective, with a focus on how people live, how the government has transformed a small colony into an international economic powerhouse and why their laws are so strictly enforced. The food was great, very diverse and definitely not mainstream. Be prepared to challenge yourself! The tour finished around 1am,... More

My recent "food tour" booked with Tony Tan was the highlight of my December trip to Singapore. I was interested in experiencing the food from a cultural perspective and Tony certainly delivered that! We visited a hawker center for brunch which was a great experience. Sampling all the authentic foods that I missed on a prior trip was worth the... More

This is more than just a food tour! This tour goes beyond just pointing out the local attractions. Our guide, Tony weaves in the local history, culture and heritage while we walk and stopped at various locales. Tony brings you right into the heartland of Singapore (Joo Chiat/Geylang area) and in 6 hours, you get to know a little more... More

My wife and I were only in town for a few days none of which were on a Thursday for the regular food walk. We were, however, lucky enough to get Tony for a personal tour, food bonanza, history lesson and political discourse! I highly recommend Tony. He's personable, curious, funny and passionate about many things including Singapore and goes... More

Pros: - Tony is extremely knowledgable about the local culture, history, politics etc. - Food is excellent, and plenty. Really a wide variety of dishes. Was the best meal we had in Singapore. - Never felt unsafe about hygiene. - I believe this is the only food tour currently running in Singapore, so this is your only option. Cons: -... More

Took my family of 6 (12, 14, 16, 20) and my wife and I, on this tour with Tony last week. The sheer amount of food was overwhelming, and probably could be spread out a bit, but everyone enjoyed it so much, even my 12 year old son. We learned about and sampled some 30-40 different dishes. We recently did... More

If you want a tour that gives you an insight into what it is like to live in Singapore, and experience great food, I would recommend this. Tony is an engaging tour guide, and was very informative. The food was absolutely delicious and there was great variety. They recommend you skip lunch, and I can see why! My only criticism... More

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighborhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighborhood is packed with colorful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
