Amazing spot

Worth visiting if you've ever read either the 21 Balloons or Simon Winchesters fantastic book; you need to charter a boat, though.

It's a long day but really worthwhile, we organised it through Java Rhino Eco-Tour and they are brilliantly organised and hospitable. Journey time to Krakatau is quite long but it's an amazing site to see Krakatau Anak and the remnants of the mother Krakatau. Our 6 and 8 year old had no problems walking up, loved comparing all the different... More

We set off from Jakarta at around 5 am and reached Carita at about 8 am. We had arranged the trip with Pak Samsoel Hidayat, where he took care of everything from the week before, and was very assuring in making sure that everything is already carefully planned out. We had a twin engine boat going to the island, the... More

We had a 5 o'clock pickup in Jakarta. A 3 hour car journey which was good you get to see a lot on the journey. Breakfast at the marina followed by a 1.5 hour boat journey by twin engine speed boat. You land on the active son of Krakatoa. And climb up to the level plateau. This is very hard... More

We sailed into the caldera of Krakatoa in the afternoon and made our way to the East anchorage directly across from Anak Krakatau - child of Krakatoa - which was smoking and had unvegetated lava flows. We could see the southern part of the caldera rising sharply from the sea from our sheltered spot where there was plenty of space... More

Krakatoa is well known because of the gorgeous pictures published of it. Visiting Krakatoa is nothing like the pictures. You have to take a 1 1/2 hour boat from the Marina to the volcano itself. The island of Anak Krakatoa itself is littered with trash and the only thing there is to do is go snorkeling or climb the volcano.... More

My son and my husband wanted to go to Volcano Krakatau, I wasn't sure myself as I thought it's rather too dangerous to be that close to an active volcano. But after reading a lot of reviews about it, gave me the reassurance about it. I contacted someone called Tom from Krakatau Tur by email, and we had a back... More

We lived in Jakarta for 4 years, had cousins visit, they took a long bus trip to Carita beach to then take a boat to see Krakatau. They were the only tourists in the area, they wanted astronomical price £2000 for the trip (0's are correct). They could and would not pay so found a dodgy place to spend the... More

This was the best thing my partner and I did in SE Asia. On our way to see krakatua we did some snorkelling and just as krakatau appeared on the horizon the boat was surrounded by a school of dolphins leaping out of the water all around us, approx 30-40 in number. Krakatau itself was smoking when we visited and... More

Went to Krakatau from Tanjung Lesung, several boats propose tours including cruise to Krakatau, hiking and snorkeling. The journey from Tanjung Lesung is about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on boat & sea conditions. The hike is about 30 min, easy climb but you won't be able to reach the top as the volcano is still active. Prefer to combine... More
