Lantau Island is less than 30 minutes from HK by MTR. Arrived there to take the scenic cable car ride to Ngong Ping Monastery. Chose a single way ticket so that I could take a bus ride (bus #2) down the other side of the island and hop onto a 20 minute ferry ride to Central. I found it to... more

Lantau is like the antithesis of Hong Kong city. No skyscrapers, mostly just rolling mountains, waterfalls, and jungle draped hillsides. The only sign on most of the island that you are still in Hong Kong is the Ngong Ping 360 cable car taking tourists up to the Giant Buddha, and a walking path you can take to hike up there... more

We visited Hong Kong for 4 days and spent most of them in Lantau Island. It is a beautiful, clean, friendly place with lots of attractions to go to. We went to Disneyland for one and a half days and it was just awesome. We also visited Ngong Ping and Tian Tan. The place is average but a different scenery.... more

Enough said of the Big Buddha or the cable car on Lantau Island. Followed the clear signage that leads to “The Wisdom Path” which is near the base of the Big Buddha. It’s a very scenic walk which you will pass by a “Teahouse” first and a tea plantation. Continued the walk for about 15mins will bring you deep into... more

We had a great excursion to Lantau. I do recommend an early start and an entire day there. We took the subway MTR to Tung Chung (I guess it is not a subway when it goes above the ground), and then the cable car to the top. Do take the cable car. It's better than walking and then have more... more

If you are in Hong kong for a few days like other reviews have said a visit to Lantau is a must do! We went to Lantau in March 08. We took the MTR to Tung Chung and then the cable car ride from Tung Chung there and back (this is quite a long ride about 20 minutes one way)... more

For anyone going to Hong Kong, this HAS to be in your to do list. The massive bronze Buddha and the views from the Buddha platform are just absolutely beautiful and what a huge contrast from the views on Victoria Peak! You forget to realise that only a small percentage of the Hong Kong islands are occupied and there are... more

Like previous reviewers I think the trip to Lantau is unmissable. We took the cable car across to the island from Tung Chung. We visited the statue (don't bother with the museum inside) and the monastery, then took the footpath back down to Tung Chung. I would highly recommend the walk, but don't forget sun screen and water. The path... more

Lantau island is an absolute must-do. My husband and I went to Hong Kong in October 2006 and decided to go to Lantau on one of the days. Fantastic decision. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car trip to the Buddah was worth going on alone. Wandering around the peaceful Monastery was welcome relief after the buzz of Hong Kong Island.... more
