May 2021
We (a group of six expats who live in Shanghai) went on a three night cruise on the Victoria Jenna during the Labour Day golden week in May 2021, which we organised through Yangtze River Cruises. Wonder was our consultant.
First of all, Wonder was fantastic! He was friendly and very responsive to our queries. He also helped us source a driver and a vehicle for a day trip to the Wulong Karst prior to the trip at a competitive cost (along with itinerary suggestions for the day). I would be very happy to reach out to him again for any future trips in China.
With regards to the cruise itself, the Victoria Jenna was much better than my expectations. Being a cruise company based in China, I was skeptical about the quality of service, facilities and food at first, but I was proven wrong!
The staff are very friendly and most spoke English pretty well so we had no problems communicating. The facilities were much better than I thought, though you can start seeing wear and tear since it got last renovated in 2018. The food was actually pretty good; every meal is a buffet with a mix of western and Chinese dishes. You get water, soft drinks, tea and coffee included, but any wine or beer you need to pay extra.
As for the itinerary, this is not like a Mediterranean cruise trip. The days are packed with excursions and activities from early to late. Breakfast was early (e.g. 6:30 on one day, 7:00 another day) and it felt like the cruise company tried hard to fill every last minute with stuff to do. So don't expect to have lots of 'free time'.
The Three Kingdoms show optional excursion is excellent, by far the best of all the activities, so don't miss out! It's one of the most interesting shows I've seen in China.
The Shuanggui Hill was medicore; and we didn't bother doing the optional White Emperor City excursion. The Godess Stream was also medicore. These excursions are rigid, in that you have to follow the tour guide and don't have the freedom to explore. Also, the guides are given in both Chinese and English, so there's a lot of wasting time. The so-called "local shows" are always not worth it in any place you visit in China.
The ship sails through two gorges and the narrative given during the time was helpful. The gorges are one of the highlights of the trip, so come to the open deck to see the views!
The Three Gorges Dam ship lift after disembarking the Victoria Jenna was interesting. However, the short tour around the dam was not. It just takes you to a few spots to take a few photos, and you aren't able to get really up close to the dam.
Overall, it was worth having spent the time doing the Yangtze River cruise on the Victoria Jenna. And the kind and helpful service from Wonder at Yangtze-River-Cruises.com made planning the whole trip smooth and seamless.

Wonder from Chengdu Bamboo Tours was our first contact when we started to plan our trip to China in 2019. He has been amazingly patient and supportive. After we had more or less planned and finalised our trip, Covid hit and no visa was to be had for nearly 3 years. When China finally opened again we started to refine our trip for 2023. No question was too much, all changes or additions welcome ... Wonder was always friendly, informative and replied to our emails immediately, no matter what time or day of the week - outstanding. We could not have asked for a better travel consultant! During our nearly 4 weeks trip in September 2023, everything worked out perfectly. Every transfer was on time, every guide was waiting for us at the train station or airport, the hotels were all excellent, the guides were informative, supportive and not overbearing. Even though we are vegetarians we always found a solution for breakfast and lunch (and for dinners we brought our own snacks and vegetarian pot noodles ;)). For some small changes during our trip Wonder replied immediately and made it all happen. Overall, we can highly recommend Chengdu Bamboo Tours, and our special thanks go to Wonder who has been such a friend through the whole planning process and the trip itself. Yes, China travel is not cheap, especially if you have an individual trip through an agency, but it was totally worth it. We had a safe, fun, interesting and seamless trip and we have seen so much more than if we traveled by ourselves and wasted time on internet connection problems, China Apps which do not work for foreigners, trying to hire taxis etc. etc. (small tip: when planning your trip, check the different classes available on trains and inland flights - it might be worth to go that little bit extra ...)

We were booked thru this Tour Operator to do the 4 days Yangtze Cruise. But due to the unfortunate incident of the 'coronavirus' - the trip had to be cancelled. Though disappointed - the Tour Operator's handling of the situation and communication amid extreme difficulties was excellent and very professional. My hats off to them. And we look forward to re booking with them when everything gets back to normal.

We were very happy to book our 3-day Cruise with this organization, our contact Riley was very helpful with perfect English. It's also very practical to link via WeChat.
We choose the Century legend boat which was better appointed than I expected (large cinema theater, pool, gym, karaoke, kids games, several shops, etc.) and the service was fabulous with many in the staff who spoke English despite foreigners being only 10% of the clientele.
We were always on time for the excursions and the boat booked a guide each time who spoke English. We did all the excursions: the included ones and the optional ones which left very little time to rest but if you have to skip one it is better to skip the ghost City then the white emperor temple. The boat lift is a great experience.

We did a four night, five day tour of Inner Mongolia (Hohhot city, grassland, nature parks). Before the tour, Lyn and Jack were excellent about arranging everything to our exact desires, budget, and time frame. Our tour was great, and our guide (Arthur) was good at finding us local foods and helping us explore even though we went at the end of the season and some things were closed or limited services. However, the "shining moment" of our tour was when we were suddenly told we needed a COVID test before leaving Hohhot and returning to Guangzhou. Arthur went above and beyond to help us get the test at the local hospital, and was even available for a video call the next day (when he was not officially on duty for us anymore) to help us get the results. That kind of above-and-beyond service is so typical of China Discovery, and is why we keep coming back to travel with them again and again. China Discovery staff is truly caring, knowledgeable, and willing to do what it takes to ensure travelers have a fun, smooth, and memorable trip.

We took the President no. 7 for the Yangtze River cruise tour from Chongqing to Yichang (4 days 3 nights). Our consultant, Jack, actually recommended the Century cruises because itās newer and more international (maybe in terms of food or English-speaking staff). But due to our planned schedule, President no. 7 is the only choice.
The ship is a bit old but the room is quite spacious and clean with a private balcony. The check-in process was very smooth and well organized. The cleaning staff will come every morning to change the towels in the bathroom and to make bed. The buffet has varieties of food, mainly chinese, tastes good.
We were the only foreign family on board, with my husband having a fair chinese speaking ability. The staff, despite communicating mainly in chinese, have tried sometimes explaining in English, when we didnāt fully understand.
I took 2 optional tours, Fengdu ghost city and a night performance. As the only foreigner, the staff made sure putting me in the group, of which tour guide can speak English. While visiting the ghost city, she would explain in chinese first and then translate to me in English.
The night performance is so fantastic! The open-air stage was built in a beautiful landscape surrounded by the mountains. With Lasers, light and sounds techniques, the show lured the audiences into the extraordinary ancient war scenes.
The highlight of the cruise trip was the Wu Gorges and Shennong stream. We really enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the Yangtze river.
The Covid test was organized on board on the third day, which is very convenient.
To sum up, we had a great experience with the Yangtze river Cruise. The cruise team was very friendly and helpful. Also thanks to our consultant, Jack, for your good advice.

Leo was very helpful organizing the trip. This is the second time I have worked with Leo and each time he has been professional, and very informative and responsive. The cruise accomodations were reasonable, and the service was great. Stephan was the cruise manager and did a fantastic job translating and making sure non-Mandarin speaking guests were well taken care of.

We had a great experience with Bamboo International and Victoria Sabrina Cruise. The experience with Bamboo was flawless, super clear, and no hidden fee. Received many messages during the booking process until we leave the boat, always available to instruct and help.
The cruise was fantastic, the ship is brand new and sails silently through the Yangtse, All stops were given enough time to appreciate the sightseeing with enough instructions from local guides. The ship crew were experienced and always available to provide help with all precautions taken regarding COVID-19.

I am not one to write reviews but I have had such a great experience booking tours with Leo I had to write a review. I first did a Yangtze River cruise and it was so great! He helped me make the best choice and helped me book the best and amazing cruise! I had such a great time I continued to work with Leo in planning a tour to Tibet. Since Tibet wasnāt open to foreigners at the time he suggested a Silk Road tour. He was so accommodating and helped me plan an amazing tour. Unfortunately due to COVID I couldnāt go on the whole tour. But if it werenāt for Leo I wouldnāt of traveled at all. There were a lot of changes and rearranging that needed to be done because of COVID and he handled everything so well and kept me well informed and updated. Travel in this time can be difficult and he helped so much in keeping me safe and traveling to places that were open for travel. I look forward to someday finish my tour with them. They provide the best itineraries and the best tour guides. I have been nothing but impressed with everything they have provided.

My wife and I are booked on the 2nd floor in a āDeluxeā Cabin on the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer for a three night cruise in Juneā20.
Is it worth upgrading to a 4th or 5th floor āDeluxeā Cabin or go all out and book a āSuiteā?

What is the tipping policy at the end of the river cruise and on regular tours when on ground tours?
Also, what is the most common "bill" denomination that is useful when using Chinese currency?
Thanks

We are a couple travelling alone; both 40. When we cruise, we spend most of our time in the suite, enjoying the view from our balcony. The balcony is very important to us, as is a quiet location on the ship.
My questions are:
1) Which deck do you recommend? Which one should we avoid?
2) Which position on the deck do you recommend: aft, mid, or foward?
3) Do the suites have two chaise longue or just one? (There are differences in the photos online)
4) How was the in-suite gourmet dinner and tea services? Are they worth the price difference?
Any suggestions and advice much appreciated.
Thank you!
I'm not sure which cruise 'boats' you might have access to, but the one we were on, and the 4 or more others that we saw tagging along with us on the river cruise, were certainly NOTHING like a 'cruise experience' you would get elsewhere, even on a 'Carnival' cruise line.
The cruise we bought was a stand-alone add-on to our 2 week tour package, so I can't blame the quality of our 'cruise' on a Tour Company.
Granted, these river cruises have breath-taking views, but they seem designed to provide shore excursions everyday to inject tourist dollars into the local economies.
You might have to seriously lower your expectations if you want to enjoy the cruise!
IMHO, attempting to stay in your suite for the cruise will be a waste of your time as all ships we saw appeared to be stale-smelling and 'long in tooth.'
I stayed on-board one day while 99% of the passengers (including my group) went on a shore excursion: so I can safely recommend AGAINST doing that.

What was your overall feeling on Wendy Wu tour? Did you do an extensive tour with her? We are looking atv16/18 days. I also have heard Yangtze is a bit boring except gorge part. Is this true?

Is the dress code for dinner casual? Is there air conditioning in dining rooms and in cabins? Thank you
njcavalier
Chatham, NJ394 contributions
Dress is casual for breakfast and lunch. But as with most cruise ship dining rooms, the dress code for dinner on the ms Yangzi Explorer is āsmart casual.ā Basically, that means everyone tends to avoid wearing jeans and sneakers. With that proviso, the atmosphere is very relaxed, and just about anything goes: slacks and a collared shirt for men, slacks and blouse or a (not fancy) dress for women. No one ādressed up.ā

Aboard Victoria Cruises, we offer the "Luxury Amenities" Program, which is available to passengers booking this package in superior cabins, and it is also available in suites.
This program offers a choice of two dining rooms (including the VIP dining room), daily "Happy Hour", wine and beer with dinner, welcome fruit basket, and other amenities.
The upgrade rate (in addition to cabin rate) starts at $400 per person in superior cabins, and as of this writing there is a special "two for one" offer available for superior cabins and a 40% discount for Executive Suites.
Many tour operators with tours to China also offer excellent rates for the Luxury Amenities program.

I cannot speak to how things are done on the ship youāll be taking. We traveled on the ms Yangzi Explorer, and shore excursions were included. Itās probable that excursions are included on all of the ships that cruise the Yangtze.

We will be doing this trip next month. We arrive at 430pm in the afternoon - from what I have been reading the trip does not start till the next day. Did you arrive a day before and if you did was there an opportunity to have dinner onboard - as it dose not state meals for that first day of our arrival.

Will you be taking the 4 day cruise on the Yangtze from Yichang to Chongching? We took this cruise in June and arrived on the ship in the early afternoon. We were allowed to check in although the ship was moored until the next morning. We were able to eat on board the ship for dinner the first night but it was not included as part of the cruise, so we ordered from a menu restaurant style. We were on the China Goddess 2. Ironically, the meal we ordered the first night was the best meal we had for the entire cruise.

Why does Trip Advisor not edit this site better? Yangtze River Cruises is a travel agent that books cruises on ships from several cruise lines on the Yangtze River. Many of the reviews, and almost all of the negative ones, are about individual ships, not Yangtze River Cruises' tours. For Europe, you have sites for the various river cruise lines - - Viking, etc. - - and separate sites for tour operators, so reviews about individual ships or cruise lines go the cruise line Trip Advisor listing and reviews of the tour operators go to tour operator Trip Advisor listings. Why can't Trip Advisor do the same for river cruises in China?

Very good point, especially after I had travelled using Yangtze River Cruise (the company) as my tour operator arranging all my travelling requirements for the cruise, Zhangjiajie tour and transport, I was requested to submit my feedback, when I used the company link for trip advisor, it was directed to the general Yangtze river cruise about the cruise itself and not the company, tour operator
Trip Advisor must address this as it is not fair to the operator which I found extremely excellent especially Catherine Liu who organised every detail of our 2 weeks stay in that region
