My husband and I booked a group tour with the Beijing Tour during peak tourist season and we've never been more happy with the decision. They wall here is beautiful and it doesn't have the giant mass of tourists the others did. You have the option of walking up or taking the gondola. We walked it but phew! It was... More

I'm not sure all the reviewers here are referring to the website linked to this TA entry (ie jinshanlingtosimatai.com) we sent them an email 2 days in advance and they confirmed right away with 6am as pickup time. they further confirmed this the day before the trip, only to "forget to pick us up" as they said. we waited outside... This particular hike on the Great Wall is EXCELLENT because it is the furthest away from Beijing: meaning it has very few tourist groups and crowds. When we went we were the only group on the Wall and got incredible pictures. Hawkers will swarm you from your bus to the wall and on the wall. Besides their hawking, they will... More

Despite the temperature being 36C and humidity over 90 per cent, the walk was everything I had wanted it to be from when I first wanted to walk the Great Wall when I was about 8 years old. No crowds. Almost no souvenir sellers. Clear and uninterrupted views, despite the haze.

We were on a Wendy Wu special tour, with our Ramblers group. This was the sector suggested for a good walk, it was exceptional. Weather was beautiful, blue skies (and frost at first). Because we were the only people there we were followed by the locals trying to sell stuff, but minimal hassle. Fabulous wide ranging views, and we had... More

Defiintely the highlight of our 16 day tour to China. We travelled with a group (China Star Holidays) that I would highly reccommend. It included a 2 hour stop at Badaling, which is totally restored and has lots of tourists. Our last day was a free day, and while most members of the group went shopping in Beijing (boring!) my... We had a wonderful time at Jinshanling today! Unfortunately the smog was quite bad even 2 hours out of the city at Jinshanling, but I'm sure Mutianyu was much worse. The Simatai section is still closed, but we walked from Jinshanling about 2-3 miles on the wall to the path that takes you down to the East Gate Parking Lot... More

We were in Beijing during a smoggy period and it was great to get out and see the sun and feel the breeze on the great wall. Steep steps and i would be fearful in the rain. We were practically alone on the walk except for 1 or 2 locals. I like the locals if they are prepared to share... More

Badaling and the other main touristy places are in good repair, but are overflowing with tourists. Do what I did and hire a private car and driver for the day, and have him drop you off in Jinshanling and have him pick you up in Simatai later in the day, while you hike it. The towers are filled with people... More
