Defiintely the highlight of our 16 day tour to China. We travelled with a group (China Star Holidays) that I would highly reccommend. It included a 2 hour stop at Badaling, which is totally restored and has lots of tourists. Our last day was a free day, and while most members of the group went shopping in Beijing (boring!) my... We had a wonderful time at Jinshanling today! Unfortunately the smog was quite bad even 2 hours out of the city at Jinshanling, but I'm sure Mutianyu was much worse. The Simatai section is still closed, but we walked from Jinshanling about 2-3 miles on the wall to the path that takes you down to the East Gate Parking Lot... More

We were in Beijing during a smoggy period and it was great to get out and see the sun and feel the breeze on the great wall. Steep steps and i would be fearful in the rain. We were practically alone on the walk except for 1 or 2 locals. I like the locals if they are prepared to share... More

Badaling and the other main touristy places are in good repair, but are overflowing with tourists. Do what I did and hire a private car and driver for the day, and have him drop you off in Jinshanling and have him pick you up in Simatai later in the day, while you hike it. The towers are filled with people... More

I've done the Great Wall over half a dozen times and after finding this hiking route it's the only one I'd go back to again and again. Further out than Badaling and Mutianyu, it really is a day trip out in the wilderness and you'll see the Wall in a wide range of states of repair, from the tourist-friendly to... More

You have to walk it. This is one of the wonders of the world! If you hike it late winter, you can look North to see dry hill sides facint the southern Sun, and if you look South you'll see snowy north-facing hillsides! Very cool. Dress warm

My first Great wall experience, I decided to hike it out.. the wisest decision to stay away from the touristy section of Mutianyu. It was a 10-15 Km trek partly on the wall and some parts off it. We got to experience raw and untouched sections of the Great-Wall, avoiding all the touristy-souvenir-selling sections. The 280RMB included the To-&-fro 2hr... More

Got a cheap bus tour to take us here but it was worth it. We walked all the way to the Simatai section of the wall where it is shut for repairs. There was hardly anyone on the wall except for the 20 or so people who were on our bus and the local women who follow you all the... More

I went with the organizer and the guide talk for one minute when we arrived with the cars and the we had to manage our selfs up on the wall. We were followed the whole time by annoying sellers. The wall was very nice and worth visiting. When we got back down to the carparking we had lunch in a... More

Not hidden since the Great Wall is a gigantic monument but most visitors will not know about it and will instead opt to visit Badaling. While Badaling does have its perks (such as newly restored parts), it is full of tourists. During our day hike on Simatai, we bumped into very few other tourists and the landscape itself was breath-taking:... More
