This place is a prison for animals, perhaps better suited for a study in Soviet-bloc architecture or a history of zoo design in the early 20th century. That said, they've got a six or so pandas on display in an environment that is about on par with the worst U.S. zoo exhibits I've seen. And the kiddies can feed the... more

Just recently enjoyed seeing the Panda's at the Zoo. They were nice and active in the morning which is the recommended time. I wanted to post my photo's as there were some recent panda inquiries in the forums. Enjoy if you go. more

The pandas were the highlight of my visit to the Beijing Zoo last summer---they had just brought in a new group of pandas from Sichuan province in the aftermath of the earthquake, and now the zoo boasts one of the largest collection of pandas in any zoo that I've ever seen. There were huge throngs of tourists that it required... more

Visited at the end of the low season for the princely sum of 10RMB - it goes up to 15RMB Apr-Oct and paid the extra 5RMB to see the pandas (penguins were 10RMB - perhaps they do a show?). You can pay 120RMB all-in with the aquarium but my cheapy was fine for the best part of five hours wandering... more

Going to see the pandas is a must when visiting China. If you aren't lucky enough to see them in the wild then the zoo is a very poor second. Panda enclosure is the most prominent and had reasonably priced souvenirs. The other enclosures are not so endearing. The big cat building is particulary depressing as are the hippos in... more

We went to the Beijing zoo with our two kids, aged 7 and 3 in end october. Our expectations were low, taking in account the reviews we red before. Nevertheless we really appreciated the place: the panda area is nice, you can see some of them in the trees outside, and they also have a completely renovated indoor area. Don't... more

I did not initially have high expectations for the Beijing Zoo. Guidebooks praised the new aquarium, but criticized the conditions in the aging zoo and suggested that the pandas were the sole significant attraction. One book even suggested allowing only an hour for the entire zoo experience. Online reviews decry the conditions and recommend skipping it. After spending the entire... more

If you just go here to see the pandas, you will come away thinking that it isn't so bad after all. If you explore any further you will be horrified and upset at the terrible conditions and treatment given to the other animals. I had to see it for myself, as I take an active interest in animal rights and... more

After reading the reviews on this site I was somewhat wary of the Zoo. However, on a guided tour we viewed the Panda exhibition which seemed fine and so decided ona free day to visit the whole zoo. This was a mistake. I have to say that I was abhorred with the behaviour of the local visitirs who taunted the... more

In March 2007 I dragged my Mum to the Beijing Zoo because I wanted to see Pandas (I had never seen them before). I was so delighted by the Panda enclosure. The pandas looked happy, healthy and bright. They were playing and eating while we were there and it was a fantastic experience. Unfortunately the other enclousures were absolutely disgraceful.... more
