We lived in Beijing for nine years and the Great Wall at Mutianyu was our go-to Wall for taking guests. Option one: Pack a lunch and get there early and have a leisurely picnic on top of one of the guard houses. If you are athletic and adventurous, take the cable car up and go all the way to the... This section of the Great Wall has a lot of tourist but if you have limited time, this section of the Great Wall is still better than Badaling. The wall has been renovated but the hike up is still not as easy.

The views are breathtaking.....the wall is amazing. It is steep in places and some areas are uneven but nothing can detract from the wonder of this man made wonder. Wear a hat and take plenty of water and make sure your camera battery is fully charged, and simply enjoy !!!!

A real must do whilst in Beijing. This part of the wall is about 1.5 hours outside Beijing & is known as the 'fun' part, of the wall. Buy a return ticket & take the cable car up & either go back down in the cable car or by toboggan. The wall itself has been very well restored and even... More

The Great Wall at Mutianyu is best part to visit. Around 2 1/2 hours out of Beijing it is much quieter than the main wall frequented by hordes of tourists. At times we had large sections of the wall to ourselves. Be prepared to climb and for some broken, uneven ground as large sections of the wall here are unrestored...but... More

We visited the wall from Beijing on a Saturday so the traffic was probably less but it still took over 3 hours to get to the Mutianyu section. From the photos of other parts of the wall nearer to Beijing it is worth travelling further as there were no crowds on this section. There is a new visitor/ticket area and... More

I chose this part of the wall for the options of taking the cable car up and taking the toboggan down. It is possible to get all your tickets at different times but I suggest you at least get your shuttle bus tickets (to the base of the Wall) and entrance tickets together at the entrance upon arrival at the...
