Great for a drink with friends

Hou Hai must be visited at night when it comes to life. having a drink in one of the many pubs/restaurants along the lake makes for great memories.

We were taken to this area by rickshaw in order to have a meal with a Chinese family. The area itself is interesting with narrow streets and low-rise buildings and the lakes looked absolutely lovely but otherwise we were not too impressed with it as a tourist attraction.

This is where Beijing's younger set, and visitors like to be, especially if the weather is kind. It's a bit touristy but who cares, it has its own charm by day, and especially after dark. The cafes , bars and restaurants all vie for your business by day and especially in the evening. If you are going to take a... More

I had been advised to go to Hou Hai to see where the young set go to drink at night. The spot is pretty with the lake and lights but we were almost immediately accosted by men trying to lead us to 'lady bars'; drugs were also offered. When I did find a bar and ordered a cocktail it was... More

I visited this area during a weekday evening, so it was not crowded. It is full of bars, pubs and locals with live shows so it might be one of the best things to come here during weekends. The atmosphere was stunning. All the lights from the buildings, their reflections on the water of the lake and the traditional chinese... More

In the winter, you can ice chair skate on the lake. In the summer, there is people watching and boating. People swim in it year round, which is quite entertaining. There are also lots of great restaurants and shops in the surrounding hutongs. This is a spot that is truly "Beijing" and I'd recommend it to anybody visiting Beijing.

A great place to walk by day but at night when the lights come on it is a kaleidoscope of colour. A great place to relax and people watch. Lots of live entertainment. Listen from outside as the bar prices are very high. We had a couple of drinks spread over many hours as the prices shocked us. Still worth... More

We really enjoyed walking around this area, taking a rickshaw ride through the hutongs and just enjoying being outside in a more scenic area of Beijing. Lots and lots of little restaurants are located here and many with upstairs views of the lake and surrounding bars and restaurants. We found our way here by using the subway - with two... More

There are numerous restaurants and bars around the lakes. It is busy and populated by locals. Most of the bars have live music and you are able to choose the music of your choice. However, it is not the best place to go if you want to enjoy good local food, or at least we were unable to find it.... More

Nice place for a walk, enjoyed strolling round the hutong and lake but had constant attention from rickshaw drivers, restaurant touts and store staff. It would be nice to enjoy the area without the pressure. We eventually chose to eat at pyongyang restaurant where the menu looked reasonable and staff were all nicely dressed up. The staff were very attentive and later... More
