We came to this area one evening to check out the shopping and bars. It was lively, hotbed of activity with vendors, tourists and lots of little cafes and bars surrounding the lake. We found some very reasonably priced and unique souvenir shops in this area. Prices seem slightly higher in these shops, but there were some very nice packaged... More

We had only a brief few hours before our flight to relax at Houhai, but it was highly enjoyable. The lake itself is surprisingly clean, with a variety of boats to enjoy for the casual passerby. There are snack shops along the lake, as well as little specialty stalls. It doesn't warrant a whole day for itself, unlike Hangzhou's West... More

We walked there both during the day and the night since we stayed nearby. There are a lot of bars and restaurants near the lake that are normally crowded by tourists (most of them local ones). You can also do some water activities. Summer time was the only problem - to hot !!!

We had a really nice visit to Houhai in the fall. We were able to rent a boat and steer it around ourselves. The area was very busy with tourists, but still nice.

During daytime, Hou Hai is a great place to walk, enjoy the sun and see some of the local customs of their inhabitants. At night, this place becomes one of the biggest one-in-all venue to have dinner, drink, smoke, sing, play, flirt, sell, buy, scam and be scammed. Lots of different restaurants offer many different choices for your taste: Thai,... More

We loved walking around in the hutongs and seeing Beijing as it was 20, 30, 40 years ago. It is an amazing neighborhood and a must-visit if you're interested in seeing these great courtyards, alleyways, restaurants, and cafes. Lovely.

I was here around lunch time/early afternoon on a weekday and found it to be a very relaxed atmosphere. I walked around the lakes and also wandered off (and got lost) in the hutongs. I stumbled upon a temple that isn't on any of the maps, and spent about an hour there. It was the best hour of my entire... More

We went in the day and it was far too touristy (and this is Beijing!) there was just bar after bar all looking the same. Perhaps we should have gone at night and maybe we would have had a better experience. Not a must when visiting Beijing.

We spend a couple of hours at Hou Hai at early afternoon. Maybe it is better to see it at night, but finding a taxi at night in Beijing could be a little difficult. The place definitely has its own charm. I recommend you to visit it .
