I visited the Hou Hai area at night, attracted by its club scenes. Many music bars line the street facing the lake with live bands playing mostly Chinese pop music. Many singers sing cover songs with a few originals here and there. If you prefer a more serene setting, some quiet bars are located further down the road. Prepare to... More

We visited the lakes area in late afternoon, it was very busy and as the evening drew near more and more bars and restaurants had live music to attract the tourists in to eat. Its a fun area and you pay a premium for food and drink, just like trendy areas in all major cities. Worth a visit.

Take MRT line 8 and stop at Shen Sa Hai station if not mistaken or please reconfirm before aboard. A beautiful lakes surrounded by shops, restaurants, bar and pub. It is also a place to have a walk by lake side. Suggest you reach there by 7 pm to take some photos before sunset. A dinner and walks. Try old... More

We went an early evening around 6.30pm for dinner. It's quite a nice scene w restaurants n bars lined up around the lake. Large choice of cuisines. We ended up in a Korean restaurant more because the kids (3,6&7) chose it than anything else though it turned out to be quite decent. We left at 8.30 pm and the crowd... More

I have been here many times and I look forward to going each time as if it was my first. Great picture taking, lots of people, and fun food and drink make this a must see Beijing attraction. Can be tough to get a cab late at night though so you might want to leave before the subway shuts down... More

The good: ancient location around the "back sea" of beijing. nice for a stroll, grab a drink and see life pass by. It's located in the centre of one of Beijing's oldest Hutong districts, so there is plenty of culture around. the bad: in the evening the place becomes "hell on earth", overcrowded, noisy bar district, with bar-personel harassing you... Visited this area at night and it is completed lit up and each bar has it's own live music. There were even a few bars with girls doing stripteases (not actually stripping though). The area is huge so just find a place with a nice terrace and music you like. It seems like every bar sells the same Heinekens or... More

This is a shock to the senses!!! Totally amazing at night as this place is jam packed with bars restaurants all playing live music for all tastes resonating from hundreds of venues. Even at night you can still hire boats and travel up & down the lakes whilst all the neon lights reflect on the water. Eating & drinking here... More

Visit the area on a nice clear day. You can walk along the lake, enjoy the music in on of May bars / cafés along the way or rent a boat. Great way spend some time outside.

Bar after bar after bar after bar. What can be wrong with that? Each bar had live music, most had seating out front, some had seating upstairs under the stars (ok, lights reflecting off the clouds). Lots of hookah. Only go in the evening. The lights and the water are beautiful. We were told musicians worked this area in hoping... More
