What makes this area interesting is its very lived-in quality- these are not unique pieces of history, but also peoples' homes! When we visited, many of the shops were closed for the New Year holiday, but it was still fun to walk about and snap lots of photos. The views around the lake are particularly beautiful, but don't miss out... More

Very beautiful place to be at night! Winter time lake can be frozen and summer time boats roam on the lake. Beihai Park in the south and many restaurants locate here as well. If you'd like to take a HUTONG tour, here is where it starts or ends) Be careful of rip-off richshaw touts, it will charge 300 RMB instead... More

The area is old and with many protected houses known as 'Quarters' and although it is now mainly an entertainment area with bars and restaurants, it still has a residential atmosphere, and of course there are the 'lakes'...Front and Rear lakes. A lot of charm to be discovered and worth a half day's stroll. The lakes frozen in winter are... More

Icechairing and Icebiking at Houhai Lakes, A MUST. We haven't laughed like this in such a long time. Went on a business trip and took my 11 year old son and we ended up going back again and again. Beautiful at night too, gorgeous lights, fun atmosphere with lots of smiling faces.

A very unique Christmas day for Queenslanders was ice skating and biking on the frozen lakes. It was a highlight for us of the month in China. The prices were very reasonable and the scenery was awesome. Look out for the ice water swimmers on the northern edge of the lake, they keep breaking through the ice to go swimming... More

Really nice place to spend an evening since there are lots of western type restraunts and stuff. Also a nice place to go on a boat in summer on to go skiing in winter.

Winding paths, the lakes, of course, boutiques, shops of all kinds, restaurants, and a wonderful tea house with talkative parrot. We went twice during our stay.

I went to Back Lake during Winter season and the lake was frozen up to the extent that you can skate on it! It is definitely a venue that's suitable for families, friends and couples. Do not worry if you cannot skate because they have many varieties available that doesn't require skills at all. Not only are they skating blade,... More
