I stayed in this area for 8 nights in February 2014 and it was a good location. Lost of food, drink, souvenir and services like subway and bus lines nearby. The subway proximity was great for us since we ventured off to other parts of Beijing daily.

Walking around Lake Houhai at night is definitely recommended! The lake, the colours of the lights, the bars, the people, the food, the drinks. It all makes sense, it's lively yet laid back. We decided to have a few drinks at a rooftop bar and just enjoy the great atmosphere there! If there was a Lake Houhai in Holland I... More

The scenery there was great and it has a lake just right beside it. Since I visited to the place was in the afternoon, I found that not many pubs / restaurants are opened yet. You can ride on a 三轮车 / Tricycle to go along the street. There are many tricycles to rent and you don't need to ride... More

Expect lots of people, to be asked to go to a "lady bar" many times, and to hear a lot of really bad cover bands but somehow it all still comes off as charming and lovely. I think it is the water in between or the blatant attempts at plagiarism gone wrong but it is a nice place to spend... More

The individual businesses and attractions need their own pages (but they don't), so this will be for the area. My friends and I visited the hutong (authentic, old, local) across the street. THAT was its own experience. I highly recommend visiting a real hutong. I digress. We got a map from the "Official Tourist Office." The Hou Hai area information... More

You can walk the beautiful path on either side of the lake. The views are beautiful and there are many shops and restaurants along the way. For more fun, you can ice skate or rent an ice sled to zoom around on the lake.

We walked round the lakes in the evening to experience the atmosphere. Plenty of options for eating and we particularly enjoyed Nuage. Each bar offers live entertainment so it is one continuous stream of different musical styles as you walk past. Once past the bars, you find locals exercising and fishing and the whole place is full of life.

The lake was iced over and people skating and even swimming! The bars were quiet but made it quick to get served. Lots of choice of cuisines and local snacks.

The view of the lake made me feel very peaceful and tranquil. Looks very nice, and it is very clean. People are polite and helpful around.

I visited Houhai two times during my trip to Beijing -- I loved it. In the afternoon, it is a bit slow, but don't miss it for dinner and do a boat ride, plenty of bars, great restaurants, and a lot of good time simply watching people come and go....
