I recently took 5 cooking classes at the Hutong. For one of them I dragged my brother along (under protest) and he surprised himself how much he enjoyed the class and the food (he said it was the best meal he'd eaten in Beijing!). Sophia was the teacher for all but one of my classes and she was amazing! Friendly,... More

Last night was my third visit to The Hutong and it was another great evening. We met with a group of friends for The Hutong's "wok n wine" and had the best laugh. I love their cooking classes and what really makes it special is the lovely Chef Sue. She is so sweet and knowledgeable, it is actually like being... More

The Hutomg is one of those places that let you enjoy some of the best things that Beijing and China has to offer. They run an extensive amount of tours through the city and we did The Hutong´s hutong tour and was quite interesting and informative. Nevertheless, what I would suggest not to miss if you ha ve a short,... More

This tour of the world's largest tea market (Maliandao) was one of the best things we did in Beijing. We lift our tea cups to The Hutong for organising such a great tour! China is the home of tea and Maliandao market is the epicenter of the tea trade so there are few better places to sip your way through... More

The Hutong offers an excellent live drawing class every Monday evening. As far as I know it’s the only place in Beijing where you can drop by and get a closer look at a Chineese model. And that’s an interesting thing for thoose of us who has a drawing habit. The place is small but there is always room enough... More

I took a mixology class at The Hutong recently and was blown away by the instructor who was professional, knowledgeable and engaging. I didn't know anything about cocktail making and was a little intimidated at first, but then I learned how easy it was to make a variety of drinks just by knowing a few basics. Now I feel confident... More

This workshop was a thoroughly engaging introduction to the Chinese kitchen--and I was especially grateful to Sophia for extending the class into her personal time when it was apparent that the class content would not fit within the 2.5 hours allotted. The reference sheets on ingredients (with names not only in English but also in pinyin and Chinese characters) are... More

Did the food market tour followed by the cooking class and it was a wonderful experience. My classmates included folks from Holland, England, South Korea, South Africa, Canada and me from the States. We had a great time, learned a lot, cooked a great meal and then devoured it. If you like to cook you'll really enjoy it but even... More

Last October my wife (who is an experienced cook) and I (who can eat, but not cook) took the market tour and two classes (Chinese Essentials and Sichuan). These are the outstanding memories of a very enjoyable 10-day trip. A super way to get quick immersion in local custom and practice, with a great blend of local and international expertise.... More

I signed up for a Cantonese Cooking class. I immediately received a very detailed and exact plan, a lot of documentation and prompt messages in response to the questions I had. The instructor was excellent. She spoke very good English and was extemely informative. She had traveled abroad, hence her understanding of foreigners was quite good. We were 12 participants... More
