We (my wife and I) did the train journey from Xian to Lhasa ( T 27 Train) in mid May 2009. It was one of the highlights of our 3 weeks long vacation in China. We reserved two soft sleeper beds through a travel agent and getting into the train in Xian went smoothly. Train left Xian around 9:00 a.m.... more

Just a comment on what has been written here earlier : the train is NOT pressurised( first clue : there are no airlocks ) , anyone who fires up a iPod or laptop may be in for a expensive learning experience. The train delivers oxygen in two different ways , the already mentioned oxygen outlets and by raising the oxygen... more

We have taken the Lhasa Express in Xining on the 12 and 13 of september 2007. The sleeping compartment for 4 was reasonable as we were a group of 12, and also the journey on the next day went fairly quickly. Qinghai-Tibet Railway Tip 1: Best time to visit Tibet is in the 1st half of June, i.e. before monsoon arrives. Tip 2: Instead of flying to Lhasa, better to go by train so as to reduce the impact of altitude sickness.
