Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom. Not much survives of the splendid buildings and temples today. The site is marshy in places because it is believed that the Nile flowed closer to this city in ancient times and changed its course, making the move to a new capital necessary. We went to the Memphis as part of our guided tour with Rasha. The museum has quite a few large statues of Ramses. An alabaster Sphinx (2nd largest in Egypt) of an unknown pharaoh. The highlight being the enormous statue of Ramses the Great. The detail on this masterpiece is amazing. more

On our first day in Cairo, our tour guide took us to see Saqqara, Memphis, Giza (Pyramids and Sphinx). In between, he took us to a papyrus shop and a perfume shop. Memphis used to be the capital of Egypt and it houses many cool artefacts and statues. It is here where you will see a massive sarcophagus of Ramses... more
