Even though the church was under reconstruction at the time I visited it, one could see how nice it is. Metekhi Cathedral is situated in, in my opinion, the most beautiful spot in Tbilisi and according to what our guide told us the history of the very spot where the church was built is very impressive. So, visit it and... More

As we were told it is one of oldest church in the area. It was under renovation and we were not permitted to go inside. It is located in a very nice place of the city and overlooks the nice river of Tbilisi.

The cathedral stands at a very strategic spot, around the bend of the river atop a hill, in the old town. The statue of Kind Vakhtang Gorgasali looms in front of the cathedral. The inside of the cathedral was cool and quiet that offered a respite to us from the rising heat outside.

This was the first church we visited on our tour through Tblisi. Although it is an active church we felt more in a museum then an active church. So many icons, artifacts and history. It is very interesting!
