This Church of the Assumption (it doesn't seem to be a cathedral) was first built in 1278 as part of the fort and palace complex of a Georgian king. It is in a very defensible position on a cliff above the Mtkvari River, but that didn't stop the Mongols destroying it. The walk up to it from the bridge over... More

This cathedral was large enough that even with a Sunday morning visit, there was room inside. Outside is the Vakhtang Gorgasali statue.

There tons of Churches and Cathedral in Tbilisi and this one is just a little normal one, there is nothing special or interesting about it except its location on the hill... nothing more.. if you have much time in Tbilisi you can visit it, otherwise don't waste your time here.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I has been there during weekend (i tried twice to visit saturday and sunday) and i cannot in cause was too crowded for wedding ceremony; anyway it was a good chance to observe goergian people during celebration.

Our hotel was near, so I walked in this area. This church has amazing views of the city. Love the statue here too. Inside the church is not that impressive, but still worth seeing. It is very old.

For the general tourist, this is valuable for its antiquity and beauty. For anyone with any spiritual interest, this is a vastly significant church with a long history of worship and worth visiting for that reason alone.
