A great day's snorkelling (hired snorkelling equipment from the dude who runs the glass bottom boat operation before boarding). Watch for sunburn, though. A lovely little day trip from Noumea.

On the last day of our visit to Noumea we decided to take the water taxi from Anse Vata (only 1200 XPF per person - $A14.45) principally to see the art exhibition which is in place until early February. Exhibition is worth a visit. Yes the island is small with about half reserved as bird breeding habitat. Facilities have been... More

A short boat ride takes you to Ile aux Canards - a small island off the coast from Noumea, which is great for kite surfing, or just for a low-key lunch.

My husband and I have just returned from a cruise where Noumea was one of the ports. Instead of paying the appr AU$90 each for the tour offered by the ship we chose to go to Duck Island under our own steam. There was a free shuttle bus from the ship to the tourist centre in town which seems to... More

We headed out here intending to spend half a day snorkelling and lounging on the beach. When we got there it was very crowded and the beach was very rocky. Hiring snorkels was a pain, with it being unclear how to pay and the staff not being helpful. When we went to select our snorkel kit the staff tried to... More

This is only a very short ride from Anse Vata. There is a snorkeling trail with panels describing the fish and corals. Definitely not the best snorkelling in New Caledonia but still good (we saw a cuttlefish). Go early in the morning before the wind pick up for best visibility. There is a bar/restaurant to have a bite and a... More

We have been here several times just for the snorkelling, which is fantastic. I would advise to take a picnic lunch which you can buy from any of the local shops in Noumea and take your own water. The facilities eg toilets are just OK but remember this is a very small island. They cater for lunch and you can... More

Book the water taxi from your hotel and take the five minute trip. Great beach, great cafe, great snorkelling.

This little - and I mean little as in you can walk around it in 10 minutes - island is the perfect place for an afternoon visit. There is a bar and restaurant on the island and they hire the very comfortable deck chairs and large umbrellas that are scattered about the perimeter of the island. They also hire snorkeling... The trip over was quick and easy by the taxi boat. When we arrived at midday most loungers had gone and they had run out of snorkelling gear so not a great start but within an hour people were leaving and we found a good spot. The snorkelling was great so close to shore with a big variety of fish... More
