Yes, they really do use ancient wooden vats. Learning all about how rum happens was fascinating and the tasting at the end was quite enlightening. More

We were promised a bottle of their rum after the interesting (but not exceptional) tour ot the facility. We complained! No luck! They told us that the offer (currently on their automated phone system) was no longer available. The next day we phoned that number again... NO CHANGE.. They were still looking for tourists to fleece. Typical of Guyana's so-called... More

Loved it. Typical setting. Hundreds of years old and still the old wooden vats are working. Sure there is modernization and upgraded holding tanks etc. but to actually touch history, drink the results, and visualize time makes the Demerara Distillery a great visit. Funny to see, and after your visit you will only want to drink Demerara Rum. The factory is very run down, but the people are all very friendly and the rum is obviously excellent. At the end of the tour you visit the dislillery's bar, where you receive shots of different rums. I heard rumours that you would receive a... More

I have loved El Dorado rum quite passionately for about a year and was quite fascinated to actually see its source. I was a bit dismayed by its grimy appearance, but hey, this is an industrial factory in a developing country. I haven't let that glimpse dissuade me from enjoying my current favorite bevvie, El Dorado 15 over ice. For... More

If the idea of rum conjures nothing more than visions of bad cocacola-mixed cocktails or high-octane/high-headache mojitos, then you're bound to be wowed by the output of this 50+ year old facility on the east banks of the Demerara River. El Dorado rum - the signature output of this somewhat delapitated and at times grimy facility - regularly bests a... More
