I loved the smells and the diversity in materials and people and shops. Its a place you can spend in for days - because there is everything there - from foods to gold to fabrics... you name it. Damascus is believed to be the oldest continually inhabited city on the planet. Certainly wandering it's maze of narrow street and ally ways you get a sense of a decrepit ancient city compete with Roman ruins, palaces, grand old houses and tiny tiny stores. We were staying in Palmyra, Syria and heading to Damascus without a hotel reservation. Our hotel in Palmyra (the Tower) kindly assisted us in trying to locate a hotel.
