We visited the Grand mosque@ Muscat during our trip to Oman on 2 nd May 09. It was a bright and sunny day. The opeing times for public viewing is from 8 am to 11 am. Fri and Thursday closed...children below 10 is usually not permitted..however we were allowed to bring in our kids provided they dont make any noise...the... more

The Grand Mosque is incredibly impressive. Until recently, it featured the largest woven carpet in the world (evidently a new carpet in Abu Dhabi is now larger). The mosque is very new, but the architecture is traditional and classic. The mosque is open weekday mornings. Women must be covered, although the mosque is very welcoming to non-muslim tourists. Really worth going to see the Mosque. Although new, it's really lovely. Biggest tip is for ladies - make sure you have something to cover their heads, ankles and wrists - otherwise you'll be turned away (my shirt was long sleeved by didn't quite reach my hands and I was refused entry. A just amazing building. Very easy to visit on your own - no need to take a tourist trip! There is plenty of parking on site. AT the tourist entrance there is a shop selling a guide to the Mosque - 1 rial. They also give you an excellent free map of Oman which is useful if travelling by car.... more

Having just come back from Oman and looking at my photos of the newly built Sultan Quaboos State Mosque I have to enthuse about its grace and majesty. This beautiful building is open to the public (non Muslim) between 8 - 11 every morning except Thursday and Friday. It is simply stunning in its design and very tasteful.
