This is one of the biggest attractions in Oman. Rent a 4x4 car, drive and spend a night there! Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) is impressive and truly beautiful. Wahiba Sands (I crossed it with my car) are not worth mentioning when compared to Rub' al Khali. There is a road through Rub' al Khali (I only know Omani part).... More

We spent the night in a pretty rustic, but "permanent" tented camp on the southern extremity of The Empty Quarter. It was a 3 to 4 hour drive from Salaleh, but worth every minute of it. If you're interested in the lost city of Ubar, it's not in the Empty Quarter of Oman, as asserted by Nicholas Clapp in his famous book, Road to Ubar. I am a big fan of deserts although I haven't visited a lot yet.
