This was the place to be in the sixties. It had eveything that Beirut could boast. It paid a huge price during the civil war and most businesses fled to other locations. was advertised as student place, but looked more like place where local families come. Lots of gaudy uninteresting shops, restaurants very mediocre

Hamra Street is one of the thriving hearts of Beirut and something you should certainly see, ideally in the evening when the shops and the shoppers are in full color and activity. The area is host to many good restaurants, clothing shopping of many kinds and hotels and flats packed into every possible space.

Busy, noisy, stinky, crowded with Syrian refugees and beggars, in 2013 hamra is at its lowest in years. However it still manages to be the most fascinating, alive throbbing heart of Beirut. At anytime during the day you can find good food, drinks, very interesting company for a casual chat, or just space for one of the rare walks you... More
