The floor mosaic is located in the apse of the church of St. George at Madaba. It's not oriented northwards, like modern maps, but faces east towards the altar in such a fashion that the position of places on the map coincides with the actual compass directions. Originally. it measured 21 by 7 m & contained over 2 million tesserae. Its... More

I liked the mosaics and the quality of the newer ones is spectacular. I first went to the St George church with the map, but found later that there are many more locations nearby that the guides don't offer that are actually better

It feels so interesting to stop by a shop that has a workshop of mosaic products and learned from them how they diligently and patiently work out to finish such a work of art that is truly exceptional in taste and design. i bought a mosaic clock and a 3d mosaic work with a flower design. We visited the City of Mosiacs and after a look around, we were taken by our guide to a local factory, wher you can see the mosiacs being made. Tehre's more history about the making of mosiacs than what you see too. The current affaris and how the Government's involvment in helping the staff make the mosiacs is great. Modern... More

If you like to see an old mosaic in an old church with many old European or US people go there. I would advise not to use this or any other agency (rip off), but take a taxi to go to Madaba.

The town of Madaba is situated 32 km south-west of Amman and is famous for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. The most famous site is the 19th century Greek Orthodox St.Geoge Church with the 6th century mosaic map of Palestine and Nile delta. The mosaic map (10,5mX5m) was unearthed in 1864 and only one third of the 2 million pieces... More
