These ancient ruins are all that remain of Herod's three-tiered palace that was built as a refuge for his family: the upper tier served as the residence, with panoramic views to the north and east; the middle tier is a section of Herod's own winding staircase; and, the lowest tier features many restored frescoes and the bathhouse.
