If overloaded with Byzantine and Ottoman history while visiting Istanbul, pay the comparatively steep entrance fee to see a different side of Turkish culture. Even those who are not modern art enthusiasts will find something of interest. We are glad we came.

It's not the biggest gallery in the world, but every piece in there gets the required space to make it stand out. They have a lot of different and skilled artists from allover the world. The only downside is the security guards, they are absolutely everywhere, and you feel a bit watched

Everything in Istanbul is so old, so a visit to this museum brings you into the 21st century. It is a great place to visit. The museum has some interesting collections. Check their website to see current exhibitions. The museum is not very big and features mostly Turkish artists, but it is worth the trip. You can see everything in... More

Any tourist visiting this splendid city should visit this museum, and add it to the city's 'must see' list. It not only expresses a less known voice of Turkey, by showing an intense art life, mostly unknown abroad, but it propels the country itself into the 21st century by showing how vibrant the Turkish art world is, and integral to... ... and the simple very modern architecture. Open space, no sepearting walls. Very light. Not so sure about the art pieces, but the entire atmosphere and the attached restaurant is wonderful!

Istanbul Modern is the first private museum devoted to modern and contemporary art in Turkey. Located beside the Bosphorus, the museum brings together the Istanbul cityscape with the production of arts ranging from painting, sculpture and photography to video and new media.

I went to the Istanbul Modern Museum with low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised. The museum is not large, but it had a nice range of styles. I would go again.

The Modern Art Museum is located on the water and the view is spectacular. There is a restaurant and coffee shop on the main floor. The exhibit showing when I visited hosted international artists raising issues of nature and our surroundings. The exhibit was small but some pieces were poignant. The gift shop sells locally made jewellery and crafts at... More

Staying in Karakoy

Neighborhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
