The area is nice, and there are a couple of interesting places, but overall the museum was not worth the trip out there. Better to stay closer to the center of the city.

I love contemporary art galleries. They really give you a feel for a place: The people that live there, the type of art that they produce. I had not seen much contemporary Turkish art before I visited here. There is a wide variety of mediums represented from more traditional painting through photography to installation. I really enjoyed the variety. There... More

Definitely worth a visit if you're into galleries. There are works from Turkish artists as well as international artists. Well curated. Weird location though, due to heavy construction on both sides of the entrance driveway. Just keep going down the laneway, even though it feels wrong.

This excellent gallery of modern Turkish art is well worth visiting. It also makes a great independent excursion for those who have arrived on a cruise and have just a couple of hours to spare in Istanbul. You might find that your ship is berthed right in front of the gallery but you will still need to walk down to... More

Modern, but accessible art made for a interesting and very cool experience on our last day in Istanbul. I'll focus on transportation: From the Sultanahmed take the tram T1 to Kabatas until Tophane. Keep walking in the direction of the tram for about 200 meters, then turn right. Upon arrival you can safely store your bags and enjoy this wonderful... More

The Istanbul Modern museum is really a tremendous place to go. We went early and had a great breakfast before going into the museum. I'm told dinner is wonderful too and the bar looks grand. The exhibitions were really grand. The art exhibitions really give you a feeling for how Turkey has changed and how the artists of various periods... More

Anyone interested in Turkish modern art should stop in at the Istanbul Modern. A good collection in a restored warehouse, with a commanding view of the Bosphorus.

It took a little something to find the place (you can see the large red sign behind the roadside buildings but navigating round to get in there took some minutes) but once there it was a real gem. Despite part of the building being roped off when we visited, the remaining content was very well done, thought provoking and well... More

Staying in Karakoy

Neighborhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
