Some exhibits that broke new ground for me, but [Bias warning] - being Kiwis, my partner & I were so pleased to see one of the desk clerks wearing an Aotearoa New Zealand T-shirt. We had a long conversation & welcome to Istanbul Modern.

The Museum of Modern Art is a very low key relaxing way to spend an hour or two. Finally a break from the hustle and bustle of Istanbul. Bring a student id if you have one since there is a discounted rate for students. We ate lunch in the Museum's restaurant after. Pricey but delicious and well worth it.

If I had been in NYC I would be impressed but since I was in Istanbul I was simply floored. The whole experience was great. The layout is well thought out and even though there are a lot of people in the space you hardly notice them. The views are also breathtaking, in terms of the art there are many... More

We love to visit galleries and muzeums of modern art and Istanbul Modern provides excellent inside into the art scene of modern Turkey. It's well organised and provides a great break from traditional turisty attractions of Istanbul. It has a cafe with amazing view on Bhosporus.

Perhaps 10-20% of the exhibits honestly merited the title of "art." Much of it was just ridiculous. For example, some guy sent in a video of himself dressed like a woman, trying badly to bellydance, and they actually put it on display.

I loved the place a lot. Bright spaces, great installations. Two installations have touched me deeply - woman in yellow rain coat is lip-syncing with Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" with Istanbul of 1970 on the background. I watched it for several times in a row and would watch more if my friends wouldn't pull me out from the room. If you... More

Finally major modern art venue in Istanbul! The collection is growing, the pavillion is interesting in itself and the restaurant offers stunning views of the Bosphorus.

I walked to the Modern Art Museum and it's not a very piqturesque area or a particularly inspiring building from the outside and you go through a car park to enter but once you're inside it's a whole different story. Great art, displayed well with English information about each piece. Good use of multi-media.

Staying in Karakoy

Neighborhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
