OK, this is an underground cistern, a large chamber supported by numerous pillars, once used to store water. This is a very unique attraction. You venture underground to see an area which used to provide water to Istanbul. There are beautiful columns lit up in a beautiful red light. The two Medusa heads are at the end of the cistern and are very interesting. We spent a little less than 30 minutes down there, but definitely enjoyed it.... more

I reiterate that the Cistern is worth a visit. Not only is it easy to go to, since it is near other major attractions, but it is definitely one of the more unique things to see. I read about the cistern on Trip Advisor and I agree that it is worthwhile to visit. We rented the audio guide but it did not give much information.
