I, personally, loved this place, because I appreciate Islamic Art, especially the beautiful calligraphy. You see lots of that in this museum, that and century old carpets and prayer rugs, headstones from old tombs and filigree writing utensils, etc. And there's a special sections where you can learn tons about anthropology and history and coffee. This museum, conveniently located across the Hippodrome from the Blue Mosque, is worth a look if you are interested in a walk through Turkish history. Collections include clothing of the Sultans, achaeological pieces, household and personal items from former Sultans, carved wood pieces, and a lovely Turkish rug gallery. It's a lovely and varied collection of pieces of Turkey's past.... More

If you are into history and in particular Turkish carpets it is worthwhile seeing. It has many ancient carpets that are wonderful to see. It is right across from the Blue Mosque so an easy stop if you are in the area. There is a small fee to get in but worth spending the money. More

If you have limited time in Istanbul, do NOT miss this museum. If you want an education in Ottoman and Turkish arts, carpets, calligraphy, etc. this place has some serious eye candy. Make sure you visit the ethnography section for a great overview of the turkish nomads and tribes. The 'carpet' room displays the best collection we saw in the... More

We visited this museum using our Museum Pass. There are some great artifacts in here. We absolutely loved the old hand-written Qurans. These were hundreds of years old and the calligraphy was amazing. Some were massive and some were so tiny it was unbelievable. There are plenty of other artifacts here that are great as well. We spent about an... More

This is a beautiful museum with cultural objects: calligraphy, holy texts and objects, rugs, tiles and ceramics all displayed in an historic building in the central area across from Sultanahmet {Blue} mosque. The wall texts provide good background information that encourages the interested tourist to read more deeply. We toured with friends from Iraq, who were able to explain more... More
