The building looks so nice and impressive from the outside, and they even have a sign board at the entrance telling about all your options regarding what to see, but the first part of the museum is in a poor state and the second part of the museum is closed.

We spent an afternoon at this museum - which was very hot and stuffy. The lighting is poor and the artefacts do not appear to be laid out in a logical order. In fact, I had to return to our coach before the end of our tour as I was overheating!

Not a lot about the progression of the history of the country, and not very much at all on the last 300 years. A reasonable amount on the Buddhist and Hindu progressions. for an extra 250 rupees ($2) they allowed you to take as many pics as you wanted. oh, and even though they had fans throughout, after a long... None of the exhibits were placed under proper light...i should have carried a torch! Although the exhibits were comprehensive, display was an issue.

With even a short time it is possible to enjoy a tour of Sri Lanka's vibrant and diverse past. From the earliest years right up to modern day the Museum offers a thorough education with well thought-out displays and explanations. The building itself is very impressive and adds a touch of colonial glamour to Colombo. Well worth a visit.

I often find museums in some countries are a bit of odd or dont tell you much. This one had obviously had some money spent on it as it was good. dont bother with the natural history museum behind it. You have to pay again to enter and it was hilariously bad. Ps Make sure you go to the canteen... More

There is a wealth of material but the building in which it is housed is gloomy and poorly lit. Little information is given in English

I do hope the National Museum's interior starts to live up to its magnificent exterior. For a country with so much history there is certainly some work to be done modernising the exhibits. Its still a wonderful way to spend a morning. Perhaps some air conditioning to replace the ageing fans??

Beautifully displayed objects with adequate descriptions and a grand façade makes the museum definitely a must see in Colombo. The only sad thing is that the manicured lawn is off limits to public.
