This museum is in the 17th century residence of a Dutch governor. It tells a lot about the history of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) on the island. This was the first multinational founded by Dutch citizens. The VOC took control over the coastal areas of Sri Lanka and built many forts of which the one in Galle is... More

Certainly, it is a really old building in the middle of very busy street. The are not many artifacts and displays in this two storey building. National museum is 10X better than this place. One can easily visit the entire place in 30 minutes. Same as other attraction places, tourists have to pay 5 to 10 times more for the... More

Location: After doing extensive planning by plotting out the location of the museum with online mapping, printing the map out, we still got lost in the Pettah market area trying to find this museum. We eventually got a tuk-tuk to the museum. It wasn’t worth going on a wild goose chase in the intense heat of the afternoon. Description of... More

This is a great old building & made even better by the informative tour we were given by a member of the congregation who obviously loves it. He told some wonderful stories, showed us many things we would have overlooked, and generally brought the building to life.

The building is a fine example of Dutch architecture in Sri Lanka. The 'meda midulla' or centre garden with a well is typical of Dutch houses in the 18 th century in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately the building is not well maintained. It being in the heart of the commercial capital of colombo, pettah makes the dust very difficult to maintain.... More

The museum has not much to exhibit beside a few photos, documents in Dutch and furniture at Dutch period time that make it look like a furniture store on 2nd floor. If you are close by, pop in to visit, other than that, paying a tuk tuk to come here is quite a waste.

Don't expect a sophisticated museum, and it was probably a little expensive for what you get, but there are a couple of pieces of old furniture and fittings plus copies of significant historical documents and maps. The room full of 17th century tombstones was especially fascinating (all with skull and crossbones in the style of the day). We visited on... More

The Dutch Museum offers a display of old dutch furniture, but does not any value in understanding on what happened during that period.

I literally take a swooning glide back through the arches of history when I step into this place. I can just imagine thanks to the design of the museum what it was like in eons gone by
