A huge bay with no waves entering in. All big waves are broken at the "Surfers Point" making them level out as the move further into the bay. So surfers of every competency level can choose where to join in to the waves. There was no sea breeze what so ever. Kind of surprising.

I've been there in September 2012. It's totally different Sri Lankan experience, comparing to the West of the country. Not massive tourist destination back then and local workers were not so used of tourists - e.g. sometimes they brought cutlery after the food was on the table in the restaurants.

We rented two surfboards for three days and I realised at the second day that the leash is broken. I don't know if it was broken when i rented it or how it happened. I didn't have an accident, I just used the surfboard. And I Wwas happy to notice it at the beach and not in the water. They... More

When i arrived in Arugam bay yesterday, i was hoping to find a nice mix of people, locals and activities. But i'm a bit disappointed and will probably leave sooner than expected. Arugam might not be developed, but it is a super 100% tourist place without excuse. Arugam bay only exists of surf shops, tshirt-shops and over priced restaurants. Oh,... More

Arugum Bay, on the South East coast of Sri Lanka is an oasis of tranquility...sparkling sea and warm sands..great value dining, and a world renown surf break! Great Surfing is still the greatest pull to Arugum Bay and I highly recommend Hassan's Surf House, on the main road, first shop on the left after the bridge.Hasan really know the surf,... More

I cant understand why guys in arugam bay put too high prices for their services and food in restaurants? One local explained-not so many people come here and in order to survive they appoint high prices. Portion of chicken rice and curry starts fron 300rp and the portion size is just for one! The same price but for portion for... More

Arugambe is still one of those places where mass tourism hasn't spoilt the charm. Big hotels are on the way however but it still a good place to chill in the waves and watch the fishermen in the estuary. I gotta say that the mangrove trip is a bit of a rip off. Far better to take an autorickshaw 10k... More

Loved it, stayed at Hideaway one night, thankyou Sharon for your hospitality and another night at Avingit a bar with rooms to rent run by a great guy from UK called Adam, really friendly atmosphere and fabulous pizzas. I thought the locals were great, would certainly return when surf is up!

Great place, very relaxing. There are many places around there to hang around. Many other surfing places can be found around the area like Whiskey point, Okanda. Clean beaches, still not corrupted. Many places around for food. Few places to buy a ice cool beer. Hope to go there again soon
