Took us 17yrs of visiting Sri Lanka to get here and it was worth the wait. Great place with some lovely accommodation, shops, bars and restaurants. It is not over developed and so glad we made the 8hr journey to get here.

Arugam bay seemed to be a popular surfing spot, but it wasn't good for much else. After visiting stunning beaches such as uppuveli and passikudah on the east coast, arriving at arugam bay was so disappointing. It's a small bay full of fishing boats, little space for sunbathing, and sea too wavy for swimming. Arugam bay is NOT a paradise... More

Do not fly from Europe or the Americas just to come to Arugam Bay and surf. There are much better and closer places to home. It's honestly just a beach and not that unique or better from any other beaches around the world. There are much prettier and better places to visit in Sri Lanka than here and around the... More

Just spent a few weeks down the east coast of Sri Lanka had some great waves .and was looked after by Hasan from Hasans surf house just as you come into town on the left side. He is very helpful and can not do enough for you. He also stocks surf boards for hire and sale and also does lessons... More

I've visited Arugam Bay multiple times before and always had an amazing time surfing with friends, relaxing and exploring the local beaches and surf breaks. However, i recently visited Arugam Bay with 2 other friends and we had some issues with taking our boards to local surf spots via tuk tuk. Being three girls we felt safer travelling together in... One of the best beaches in the East coast of Sri Lanka. The beaches stretch for miles. The waves are a dream for surfers. This laid back stretch of the coast is very popular among the surfing fraternity. The people living in the area are friendly and in my opinion some of the most honest people I have come across.... i went during off season and could only be more than happy since it was quiet and i have all the chance to mix around with the locals and spend more time with them chatting through the day. Beach was rough and surfing/swimming was not really recommended. No sun light during the day as it was monsoon season. BUT I... More

Pros: Beautiful place! The moon rises over the ocean are amazing. Lagoon safari tour was full of interesting wildlife. Beach Hut is a great place to stay for economy travels. Cons: being a lone female traveller in off season made me a little conspicuous and I couldn't really get away from tuk tuk drivers out to make a living trying... More

It has a beautiful beach. During the off season a dead city by 1900. The number of lodging places around will give an idea of how it would be like during the season. Early morning with the sunrise hundreds of fishing boats leave the coast. Amazing to see.

During the low season (November to April), fewer tourists visit and the glistening green landscapes lure the off season traveler. Even if you’re not a surfer, there is plenty to do. The village is packed with beachfront quirky guesthouses and restaurants. Its an easy going eclectic place. The sea is rough and churns out a lot of sand. A walk... More
