Loved the quiet grounds and beauty of the shrines. We rented bikes in the city center and biked here about 9 am and were about the only tourists. You need to read up to realise how important this wonderful monument is to the Lao people. The gardens around it are worth a visit, too, as are the many temples and stupas.

It is an unusual stye for Stupas and given its history you know why. The gold colors are great during sunrise or sunset and of course the heat relief is also welcome at those times. There's truly nothing like Pha That Luang in the world. It is stunning and even that doesn't truly do it justice. It's located a little bit away from the center of town but worth the journey. Be prepared to be floored!

We visited Pha That Luang by bicycle. The complex is outside the centre, and you have to cycle on some of the main roads to get there. There is very little traffic, so that is not really an issue. A must see! A symbol of Vientiane. Make sure you get a good local guide to explain you the history. So much to learn!
