I live near That Luang, so this opinion is probably jaded. But it was the first stupa that I visited over a decade ago in Lao. This stupa does nothing for me. It is not ancient, nor does it have much historical significance. Almost any temple in Vientiane will give you a better experience. And this is the great thing... More

You need a Tuk Tuk to get there. Looks very impressive from the outside. But when you get past the exterior it is very ordinary and has nothing to be memorable. maybe it is more for teaching and visiting monks to have meetings. The museum was closed.

Pha That Luang is the national symbol of the country and it is best if you put this first on your Vientiane itinerary. Temple is beautiful and impressive if viewed outside but it is quite empty inside. If you are saving money, better check the surrounding temples since they offer a better glimpse of the Buddhist traditions. Pha That Luang... More

Good temple to see, as it is quite large and has a bit to walk around and look at. We arrived a few minutes after 12:00pm so the museum was closed for it's lunch break which is 12:00 - 13:00. But I wasn't too fussed about that, as we could see the Great Sacred Stupa clearly from the outside. I... More

It is definitely worth to visit this national cultural landmark in Vientaine during sunset time, especially to walk around it for one time. Of course, also need to visit inside. You will find Laos traditional ararchitecture of the building that reflexted Lao culture and identity, It is a place for those people who want to understand more about the culture... More

The National symbol,is quite nice, but you will be a little disapointed by the "museum" (5.000LAK to go in). I suggest you, to simply walk around and you will enjoy as the same manner than inside. Near the Pha you will found a nice temple, with a big sleeping buddha, and a nice area with many painting on the roof.... More

Well, it is not covered in gold leaf or anything. Just painted a bright yellow. But impressive, for all that. More interesting than the stupa are the gates which have intricate carvings, and the hundreds of pieces of stone artifacts. Some of them have writings in Pali and Brahmi, lending credence to the theory that there was interaction with Ashoka's... More

This is an eye-catching piece of architecture, but it's hard to know what a visit would be like without the background briefing from our well-informed guide who explained the religious significance and the various cultural events that take place in the precinct. Still, easy to walk around and absorb the atmosphere.
