Well, it is not covered in gold leaf or anything. Just painted a bright yellow. But impressive, for all that. More interesting than the stupa are the gates which have intricate carvings, and the hundreds of pieces of stone artifacts. Some of them have writings in Pali and Brahmi, lending credence to the theory that there was interaction with Ashoka's... More

This is an eye-catching piece of architecture, but it's hard to know what a visit would be like without the background briefing from our well-informed guide who explained the religious significance and the various cultural events that take place in the precinct. Still, easy to walk around and absorb the atmosphere.

The temple is definitely worth a visit. It's huge and very impressive. As with all other attractions in Vientiane you don't need to spend much time enjoying it.

I got up early to beat the heat, but the sun wasn't friendly for photographs. Not only is there a golden stupa, but a reclining buddha and a beautiful temple. Take a tuk-tuk as it is a fair walk!

I have lived in SE Asia for over 13 years, and have spent an extensive amount of time in Vientiane. I just got back from yet another visit, and went to visit Pha That Luang for probably about the 10th time. While the stupa looks as though it hasn't had a new coat of paint in the last 10 years... Good to see and get a picture here, but you can't go inside the temple just round the outside for 5000 kip. The temple is gold in all the photos but when you are up close its actualy really dirty and black. worth seeing since its one of only a few things to see in Vientiane

Since this is the national symbol of Laos I was expecting it to be crowded with tourist but was surprised that there were few other couples looking at the Pha That Luang and the nearby temple. Up close it wasn't all that exciting but an interesting piece of architecture.

Get a tuk tuk out and spend an hour or so here. It is very impressive to see as is all the other bits and bobs surrounding it. ie the reclining Buddha and a simply amazing portrait in the temple next to it. In fact all that surrounds it is impressive to see. Get in take a closer look ,but... More

Always great to visit a country where there are many temples like in viantiane Laos. Get a local guide who will be able to tell you everything that they know about the legends behind the golden stupa, its rough past and its restoration.
