"This is a very small concert for about 40 persons held in an ancient house in the old quarter of Hanoi. It is a World Heritage Intangible experience that is striving to keep this ancient musical performance from dying. It is about an hour show. They are quite good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission"-visited wrote"The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote « less

We were amazed by this show, The musicians and the singers were mesmerising,we were a little disappointed to see only 8 people in the audience, maybe this should be advertised more and its truly worth seeing.

The puppet show was interesting, the music was great. However the seats are very close together so if you an average size western man it will not be very comfortable however it only goes for an hour.

The show itself was very comprehensive with traditional singing, musical instruments and some very clever puppetry. We went to a 4pm session which was packed full. Apply insect repellent because mozzies attack in the theatre. Also arrive a bit earlier so you don't have to climb over people or interrupt the show. Boo hiss!

I may have set high expectation, after the "Siam NIramit" show in Thailand. The water puppet itself is indigenous and good, but there is no story line or theme that is followed during the show. Since I don't know Viatnamese I wasn't able to appreciate the dialogues/discussions.

Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre is exactly an ideal place for those who love traditional melodies with accient folk songs. The show there is great and interesting. But it's so difficult to understand the lyrics because all is in Vietnamese only, although there is still introduces in English. To get clearly the songs, you should visit there with a tour... More

An absolute MUST to see and hear. This is a wonderful show, just too short! within walking distance from our Emerald Hotel, for those who want it, there is a very nice coffee/bakery attached.

Traditional Vietnamese music...see http://www.catruthanglong.com/ for thorough explanation. Quite an unusual music using long-necked lute-like instrument with three silk strings and 10 frets, small drum and phach, a percussion instrument made of bamboo and played with two wooden sticks. The unusual singing style is, well, different. The attire of the artists is elegant and pleasing to the eye. This folk music... More

First of all, this is NOT a water puppet theater! That's a different theater in the Old Quarter! Ca Tru is an ancient, traditional folk music that is considered "endangered" and is listed by UNESCO as "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding." The music is poetry that is sung to the accompaniment of a unique 3-string lute, a... More
