"This is a very small concert for about 40 persons held in an ancient house in the old quarter of Hanoi. It is a World Heritage Intangible experience that is striving to keep this ancient musical performance from dying. It is about an hour show. They are quite good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission"-visited wrote"The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote « less

An absolute MUST to see and hear. This is a wonderful show, just too short! within walking distance from our Emerald Hotel, for those who want it, there is a very nice coffee/bakery attached.

Traditional Vietnamese music...see http://www.catruthanglong.com/ for thorough explanation. Quite an unusual music using long-necked lute-like instrument with three silk strings and 10 frets, small drum and phach, a percussion instrument made of bamboo and played with two wooden sticks. The unusual singing style is, well, different. The attire of the artists is elegant and pleasing to the eye. This folk music... More

Ca Tru made us really surprised. Those who have seen water puppets before may want to give it a miss

First of all, this is NOT a water puppet theater! That's a different theater in the Old Quarter! Ca Tru is an ancient, traditional folk music that is considered "endangered" and is listed by UNESCO as "Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding." The music is poetry that is sung to the accompaniment of a unique 3-string lute, a... More

The water puppets are well worth visiting. It is very inexpensive, air conditioned and Easy to locate ( just near the pagoda in the lake). The show lasts for about one hour and is a good cultural experience. We rushed in at the last minute and were lucky to get front row seats - it was pretty packed though so... More

My kids thoroughly enjoyed the show, was it was entertaining and well executed, The only shortfall was that it was in Vietnamese, and we over heard other tourist saying that running subtitles would have been very helpful for us to understand the story being told. That would have heightened the experience further. Despite the puppets being cared for, the venue... More

This was a beautiful way to spend an evening listening to a type of folk music of Vietnam that was lost for over 100 years. With a light rain and soft atmosphere it was like being a fly on the wall of the past. Absolutely a must see.

Very entertaining gives you an insight of their ancestral times and the entertainment of the village folks in the earlier times. Well acted , good music a must visit as this puppetry is unique to Vietnam. Don"t miss the show inspite of the theater not being refurbished.

This is for people who are curious and interested in the culture of Vietnam, or traditional music but don't know much about it. It might not be for people who don't usually enjoy those things, nor for people who are specialised. Personally I found it very educational. The music was good (apart from the drumming man which was quickly gotten... More

I wanted to take my 2 teenage children to a cultural experience - which it certainly was. It was advertised as being 1hr in duration, it went for 1hr 20mins - probably 40mins would have been enough. The first 40mins we enjoyed - nice to hear the cultural music, there was a break and we got to have a go... More
